A shelf in the woods is not safe.
But the underground shelter bunkers are :D
well my friend, its about the enjoyment of haveing a base. Also for winter.
but actually you dont need a base to play the story, wasnt the case in the first game.
Its more about sandbox or haveing small shelters with quick food storage everywhere.
Up to you if you use it or not.
It is questionable how safe the bed or shelf in wood is compared to placing them in a cabin. The cannibals will try to steal your logs, but not sure if they will steal or try to destroy your shelves. Maybe they will.
You could probably build just a little tower without roof or walls, and place the shelves and bed there.
I just think there should be more benefits. Like items that you could only place inside your home base (like a 3d printer, generator, oven, fridge, storage box, shower, advanced crafting table(bullet crafting or something)), vehicle crafting (like a bike) ...
You dont need to build anything.
If you have fun to build stuff you can do IT but If you dont Care Just Beat the Game in 2 hours
But there should be a point is my point.
There was no point in building in the first game. There is no point in building in any survival game, you build only for your own amusement.
I am confirming 100% that the cannibals will break random stuff you build if they happen across it and the mood strikes them.
They will smash a zipline you are nowhere near, random item stands like sticks.
They don't always break stuff, but they will do it.
Edit:
Having a wall restricts what they can easily get to and break, also it breaks LoS causing them to be less annoying.
That is false. In most survival games having a base is crucial. For example: terraria, subnautica, dont starve, valheim, Dysmantle, Core Keeper, Crashlands, Greenhell, etc.
Sure in valheim, you dont really have to build complex house, but you will need a hub location.
Well, "I travel in first class"
