Can this be played solo?
I know it can, but is it harder solo than in a group? Also, does it need to be online or is offline play possible?

It is MUCH harder in single player as you have infinite lives in multiplayer.

In single player you get two lives, your second defeat ends the game.

It's not that bad, just reload a save if you get too messed up or accidentally kill a companion, and make sure to use the tarp shelter in caves so you can save,

Sounds ok, apart from the two lives thing.

Its easy solo
If you dont want to build much you can beat it very fast.
If you want to build its Just to boring because there is nothing to do and the Survival Part ist Just Bad and Not even there

Multiplayer is easier in the sense that there's strength in numbers and you'll be able to revive each other and get several things done at once (like log gathering, building, etc). The game itself doesn't seem to have any difficulty scaling based on the number of players though, like the first one didn't. You get two lives per session, meaning that if you get knocked out twice then your game is over, but these "lives" reset every time you quit and load the game. That part isn't a big deal at all.

There is custom difficulty setting to change enemy amount and how tough and aggressive they are or remove them altogether.

Edit: Scratch enemy amount, that you can't change, for now at least.

How do you increase enemy amount?

I just see one to increase the animal amount?

rule #1 in this game, never stay too long on 1 spot. you get swarmed sooner or later.
you can scare them off at the beginning with wiggling a skull into their face and they run off scared but that doesnt works for long. so, best is you build multible bases on the island. prefferably near the point of interests, you´ll see soon why i recommended that as soon you enter one of those.

I mean in theory unless things scale, more people always makes for an easier game. But you can play just fine solo.

Just checked and sorry misremembered there was no enemy toggle for enemy amount, must've mixed it with animals.

It might be even easier on solo actually. I finished the game twice by now and I've been passing some areas in caves by simply sprinting past. I doubt this method would be as effective in co-op.

Another point is that there's no option to turn of friendly fire in co-op so it's a bit less stressful in solo. There aren't too many enemies to deal with for one person, biggest problem for me is the monkey-people with their smol hitboxes and nimble movement.

I agree, it´s easy solo once you get your feet wet, just have to know your limits. Also, sometimes I try to cheese in caves and take my sweet time doing it .... can´t do that in co-op. I also know when to double back, a lot of people don´t and that gets you killed.

Im about 23 hours in solo, enjoying it very much.

Playing the game solo gives me time to think and play the game more. Did 2 caves back to back solo, hard difficulty, without losing a single HP. Just because i took the time to learn the movement and weaknesses of the enemy while focusing on staying armored.. (i wanted to see how much the armor helped me. Which it perfectly did..)

So yes, there are many perks to playing the game solo.
