Unironically, that is a big brain response.
Removing something for every player when only a handful want something gone isn't very smart. Therefor, the ones that want said thing gone, should simply not use it.
Can't not use it? Lol, that's like saying you can't drive in Grand Theft Auto without having your eyes glued to the minimap, but you totally can.
How can the first game have a better solution, when the first game didn't even have a map for anything but the caves? And really, by not using the GPS, you're getting the same experience as the first game.
A cool alternative could be map + compass.
Where's that sense of relief when your character is thirsty and you're looking for water, and then you'll be like "Wait! Is that? Can I hear water?" and then you rush towards the sound and then "It is! Thank God!" etc. Where's the relief or survivorman aspect of that?
I feel like the GPS thing should be a short term thing, you have battery life in it for maybe a week or something, and then it craps out. Perhaps the devs should make how long it lasts random, though - if you noticed, it sometimes glitches out and turns to static very briefly, I think this should happen more and more as you get closer to the thing stopping working, and then finally it breaks.
However there should still be some kind of sound thing, like the beeping it does, when you get close to places of interest such as other dead soldiers with their GPS beacon, even when the map stops functioning to make looking for POIs less of a chore. There should also be a way to plug it into a PC somewhere in one of the bunkers which brings it to life again (but not take it with you) so you can view the world map + objectives from the PC, including monitoring Kelvin, Virginia and other placed GPS locations, and possibly even print out a laminated paper map so you can still have a full map of the island to consult (and maybe even place markers on?)
This way your M key won't become useless, you'll replace having a GPS with holding a map, preferably with a 3D printed compass as well.
Or they could just make it like Alien Isolation I guess, difficulty setting effects your GPS? Easy mode it will function like it currently does, a full map of objective markers with infinite battery life, Normal mode has it function as a full map and objective markers for a week or so, Hard mode removes the objective markers, and Hardcore mode just has it broken upon game start? I dunno.
Or the quality of the map is changed. Easy mode gets a full satellite type map + objective markers that shows everything, water, elevation, snow, beaches, etc. Normal mode gets a full atlas type map + objective markers, showing water and elevation, but not terrain details. Hard mode gets a standard map showing the island shape and terrain elevation, no objective markers unless linking with a bunker PC first. Hardcore mode gets nothing, but can use the PC if they find it to view the map + the option will still be there to print out a laminated map of the island and 3D print a compass, etc.
PC will also have an "Easy Mode" map (full satellite type thing showing water, terrain etc) that all difficulties can find, but since it can't be taken with you that can't be "abused" so easily.
As a cool little side thing, it'd possibly allow the PC to be used to track other players and even guide them (using the otherwise useless walkie-talkie we have lol) around the map.
Not really an answer, though. That's like responding to someone complaining the game is too short to stop running everywhere, lol.
Besides, even if you don't use it there's still a minimap on your screen. At the moment the GPS makes building a shelter almost entirely pointless, on an "Easy" difficulty mode with reduced enemies or whatever that could be excused, but for a survival game it's kind of a big problem - the survival part shouldn't be "optional" that you decide to add if you feel like it, lol. You can just daisy chain between objective POIs and caves right now...and there's no real reason not to do this.
It's going to be cool to see how the devs change the game over time, hopefully they'll do things to make building a shelter and a base more appealing. Messing with the GPS is one way they can do it, for sure.
There's always a bit of copium involved with the "it's EA please understand" take, but I really hope that's the case here.
