A solution could be like:
Download and install the VLAN software on the computers of all players who want to participate in the local network game.
- Set up a virtual private network (VPN) within the VLAN software. Follow the software's instructions to create the VPN and invite players to join the network.
- Launch the game on each computer and navigate to the multiplayer or co-op option in the game. Create or find a local server that can be hosted in the game.
- Give the other players on the VPN the IP address of the local server so they can join the game. In most cases, the game should detect the virtual LAN mode and allow you to play the game on the local network.
Note that that's been a solution for the original "The Forest", but might work for SOTF as well. never tried it here.
♥♥♥♥'s been crazy lately so I didn't notice this, good point and dutifully done.
Try the pinned answer, my method is old as dirt and is most likely out of date or patched. Wish I could be more help, good luck out there.
