I legit did get lost in the caves on the first one. Best part is I had no more cloths to make a torch; just the lighter for light. Took me hours to find the way out.
You can use them as temporary refugee in case of annoying cannibal attacks.
Okay, I have hit all the spots marked on the GPS, think I have all of the gear. When I load into the game, 2 of the 3 purple markers show back up, despite me having gotten the marker at each location.
I was thinking maybe endgame wasnt in the game yet, but google says there is an endgame. Dont really want to spoil it, but im wondering if my game is borked because the purple markers keep coming back?
there is a total of FIVE actual natural caves in the game currently that you can ENTER. caves you cannot enter are just enviroment and are not caves like the forst caves.
1 of these 5 caves is just 1 big empty room with 4 generic wood loot creates and a boat wreck in it. no enemies. no extra paths. this one is unfinished content for certain. its found at the big lakeshore on the eastern side of the map.
the other 4 caves are ALL part of story progression and are FORCED on the player in order to finish the game or get all the tools available currently. no choice. must visit all 4.
3 off these 4 caves are barricaed with wodden planks you must smash open. all 3 of these are found in the northwestern part of the map. these are the only 3 caves with actual useful items to be found in the entire game currently.
the 4th cave is the final tunnel to the end of the game. totally linear. no items of note. at the end the game simply ends and offers you the 2 ending choices. you cannot reenter this cave if you choose to stay on the island.
the 3 barricaed caves on the starting area (all 3 are found near the 3 possible heli crash sites) also require you to beat 1 and 2 first before you can even do anything in cave 3 as you need both tools from the first 2 caves to even progress anywhere in cave 3. this is only thanks to a silly invisible wall that prevents you from just jumping over.
all caves can only be played and entered from 1 point unlike old game. the exits arent marked but are there. sadly while you can enter them you cannot get anywhere due to the way they are designed. they are just exits. they are merely shortcuts back to the surface. this is really bad design compared to the first games caves.
cave 1 :
rope cannon cave. found near the heli crash site in the woods right next to where the stun batton is located. cave is mostly a straight linear tunnel path with nothing else to really discover.
cave 2:
rebreather cave.
found at the beach towards the northside. also contains the stun gun but is alot deeper in the cave. probaly the best designed cave in the game currently in terms of layout and items to be found. has an underwater exit towards the ocean. diveing in without rebreather is impossible. youll drown. the shark in the water is merely immersion and doesnt attack and just despawns afterwards.
cave 3:
shovel cave.
also known as "wtf is this enemy amount in just 1 room?" cave. has by far the most enemies of all caves in the game currently. very long cave aswell. only final story cave comes close in size.
need both rebrether and rope cannon to progress past 1st room.
2nd best cave in terms of layout and design currently.
once you take the scripted slide you cannot exit anymore until you have found the shovel. picking it up triggers a sluggy to break a wall towards an exit shortcut in a earlier room.
cave 4
hell cave.
end of the game. can only be reached by haveing all needed keycards from the bunkers and haveing witnessed GET DOWN SON event bunker and found golden armor inside.
leads into a lava cavern which has only these spider demon enemies inside it. alot of them. no noteworthy items. leads directly into end of the game event. no other exit. you get spawned outside after it in a cutscene.
and that is it for this game currently in terms of caves.
the rest is all bunkers and underground shelters most of which require the shovel to access. some are larger some are bigger. one can be partly accessed right away and contains the first 3d printer of the game. these contain all the useful tools in the game and also contain useful respawnable supplys. nearly all have a fixed save and sleep point. very few enemies and enemies here dont respawn after beeing killed. also very well lit up mostly hardly need a light source for the most part.
some of these have cave like exit shortcuts but these are just straight short tunnels which lead to an exit and they contain no enemies for the most part. thus they dont count as actual caves as they are merely exits and you dont even have to use them and could just walk out the way you came in aswell.
note : the katana is in the same place as the golden armor. aka the tailend of the game. its pretty much useless currently due to that. as by the time you can get it the game is pretty much over for the most part.
these markers are gps locators for the flashlight and the shotgun grave. they keep respawning on each savegame load. cannot be prevented. neither is inside a cave.
