For the locator I am able to place it on a stick. But, I accidentally knocked the stick over and the tracker is now gone.

Maybe a bug, like The Forest it's early access so they will probably take some time to fix everything, but even then..Stuff fell through the floor in The Forest, probably regardless of which build.
I don't know how the save system works, but if it's like Skyrim, keep at least two saves that you often save over or just save often, but that can take a lot of space.
I don't remember The Forest's save system, it is probably similar to Skyrim.
I can't remember if I ever had such issues, but I probably reloaded saves to fix any items I wanted that I lost. I save often and if I forget, I'll just have to replay a bit.
