Are you able to build struts for as the base for the bridge?
I tried the same, it doesn´t work anymore.
You need to place each log in this game, so you can´t build over water because you can´t build the foundation in water.

Really annoying, like many other things in this game...

Wouldn't the Rope Bridge assist you?

if it's only semi shallow (slightly more than standing in water height) - you can put a downwards log and then crouch and inch towards the end and place another log under the end of it as far as you can from it. It'll let you put it at the correct spot before you fall into the water. Not ideal and kinda annoying but it's let me build my base over shallow-ish water.

During winter it freezes and you can build over it like its flat ground, ive done that to bridge a lake but i have no idea if it will stay when the ice melts

Did you find out if the structures stay when Winter ends?

You can put watch tower blueprints in the water and connect them with the 'Rope Bridges'.
That's what I did. Note: For some reason, you can only connect the 'Rope Bridge' from the door side of the watch tower.

In short:
1) Select Watch Tower BP, swim in water, place/left-click the watch tower BP.
2) Climb on the prev. finished watch tower and put logs/ingr. into the second one from up there.

Each watch tower has to be a bit close to one another for this to work.
Also it's pretty expensive since each tower costs around 40+ logs.

EDIT: Later on you can remove some in-between towers and connect the remaining with the 'Rope Bridges', since you can disassemble the towers you can also save a lot of logs for other things.

Yeah you can build in shallow water like at the massive curved waterfall with the coffins on top.

Find a rock in the river and place a horizontal log it should sit just on the surface of the water then build from there. The hardest part is putting the supports under the diagonal logs as if you go under you'll throw the support and start to swim mid animation

Try placing them from different angles. This will probably never be fixed because cannibals can't swim! Which makes water the best place to build.

Don't even try to build in deep water it needs to be waist height so you can place the supports under the logs.

RIP deep water building. another game falls victim to dumbing down to appease the mainstream crowd yet again.

i placed a few downward logs going out into deeper water, then place one angled from the end, then one at the angled logs end which changes that angled log into a lvl log, make a square, then 2 angled, one at the end, 2 angled, 1 at the end, i have a 3x3 platform slightly underwater and am now placing the second floor,

If you build a bridge on the lake during winter it will stay when it melts. Once it becomes sprint, save and reload the game.. boom you got a bridge :)

You can in shallow water but not in the deeper portions. I have a base over the shallow water and mutants / cannibals never bother me there. Unlike the first one they don't run around on the bottom of the lake or ocean bed and not die. In this one they instantly drown and die. Also if you notice there is a way to set the posts equidistant apart and aligned. You will see a dotted line going out to the place where you put the post and this means it is equidistant and in line with the previous post.

If you build your base on the other side of shallow / deep water and there is no way to reach it any other way you will never be attacked. They will always be on the other side and cannot get across to you. This is the same strategy as building your base on the island that was in the first game.

Currently logs placed on ice during winter remain where placed during spring. So you can build bridges, but only when the place is frozen.
