Came here asking the same question, and I interpret the answer as "traps and defense walls."
So far, bases are a time sink with almost no value.
Pretty much.
I've been building them here and there because it's fun and they provide at least SOME protection (compared to just standing out in the open) but yeah, cannibals can get through doors, through windows, jump over walls, and stronger enemies can get over spikes. There's literally no way of preventing them getting in right now which is one of the dumbest oversights I could imagine them making in this game. Hopefully this will be fixed ASAP.
They need to add more content, right now, the story isn't worth the time and the overall gameplay centers around a feature a lot of people aren't keen on investing much time into.
In both games building a base is optional.
