How to make stairs inside?

Can't seem to get the stairs to build in my indoor building. Not sure what Im doing wrong. I cant prop up half cut wood onto the sides but I was able to prop up an entire log, but by doing so it would try and make a ramp.

You can't change between ramp and stairs with the right mouse button. You'll see the little arrow rotate. My problem was that when I propped up the logs for the sides of the stairs I couldn't build a ceiling around it. So I couldn't them built on the inside

Ok you need to build a ramp and then you can put 2 long woods on the bottom section up and then a long ontop like this: https://imgur.com/a/dmRjzRJ
Then you can replace it with stairs

You can make stairs inside you have to just build the floor then the stairs then add walls. It's a ridiculous oversight

what milkless tea said, it only gave me the option to put down a slanted log after i made the floor on top. really frustrating how time consuming building is just because of the lack of consistent control over log placement

I don't know if indoor stairs are the same but I was only able to build my indoor ramp above open ground. In other words I couldn't place the structure for the ramp onto a wooden floor, I had to break the floorboards out first so that the ramp was built over a square of grass. Then I filled the floorboards back in.
