I have no idea why you'd do this since nothing seems to change, but you can.
I can do this, but only once. Once that firewood burns down it wont let me add more to it. Only lets me relight a basic stick fire. Only once did it ever let me add more actual firewood once the initial firewood burnt to charcoal. I simply held the firewood in my hand and looked at the fire and the prompt came up for me to add fresh firewood to it. Ever since that one time I have never been able to do it again. I end up having to make new fires all over the place.
The basic fire disappears while the fire pit is permanent :)
