Building is Unintuitive and Frustrating
So, I'm just trying to build a 3x3.

The game doesn't *really* instruct you how.. and under the constant shrieks of the cannibals or w/e they are.. it makes it incredibly stressful while just trying to learn the system..

So I started with the walls. Put down all my wood after I spent 40 minutes cutting trees...

I then find out through trial and error and looking through the book (making you vulnerable) that I can't build a floor unless there are logs that make up a square.
Fine.

Then I find out I can't build a roof unless every square has 4 logs on all of its corners.
But you can't place logs, unless there's no floor.. and every time I try to break the floor it only cuts out a section rather than just letting me hit the damn thing. and then once a section is cut out, the floor section becomes impossible to hit. ALSO, when you finally DO get to destroy the floor the beams go flying, hit you, and damage your health. Same goes for walls.

TL;DR: Don't screw up under pressure and stress or else you won't enjoy the game for 3 or 4 hours. Get gud. You should have just known how to build before you ever started playing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Give it time, it's still very early on, I mean it's day 1 of early access lol. This is pretty much the first time we have seen this type of building in a game, we got to let the Devs adjust it and iron it out before we can complain.

Also I am glad there are still prefabs for people who can't be bothered building manually.

I like the new building more but yeah it takes time to adapt to it, we need some time for developers to introduce it in a more understandable manner.

Open your book, hold down X and you'll go back to the more simple build system of the first the forest. Might help you out in this case.

I love the new building style, myself.

Ik Ik.. I actually like the idea of the system. Just venting cus it felt like I wasted so much time under stress because the details of the system weren't properly communicated. If they introduce a proper tutorial at the start for building (just pop-ups would be fine) then I wouldn't have anything to complain about.

I feel like these things should be expected, it's day 1 of early access, do not expect a polished and user friendly experience. If people can't handle janky controls and the odd bug they should not be buying early access games, not saying that's you but just a general thing.

Just wish there was a better place to share feedback rather than these steam forums

Maybe i'm one of the few, but I like that they haven't done that. They're giving you vague instructions that are somewhat clear, yet still require you to use your own brain to make it work. The way it plays out for me is like ''ohh so that's how it works'' as I try new things. I like doing this, personally. But I get if it's not for you, though. Hence why they still have the old building system in place too.

How do you build a floor? I've set all logs in a large rectangle/square and only lets me place half logs once.

That is the floor. You have to cut down more logs, split them in half and place the half logs until that square is filled.

Not sure your aware.

Its easier to play with friends.

been having fun with the both ways of building

It took me about 10 minutes to figure it out, so it's not THAT bad. After realising that you can uncraft using C to demolish, you can fix any problems you come across, except when you make windows while building a wall, BUILD THE WALL FIRST AND THEN CUT THE WINDOWS OUT AFTERWARDS.

For some reason after you cut out a window while building a wall, you can't place a log above the window because it wont snap. So you must build a wall 5 high FIRST, and THEN cut the 2 logs to make the window.

(Also I've found no use for the tiny logs yet, or the tiny half cut logs either)

ALSO cannibals can climb through your open windows, as I've learned via having a straight up heart attack.

i suggest playing without enemies until the new systems become ingrained

this is the approach im currently taking until i can get my head around it all lolz

you can put the small ones into stone fire as firewood, not sure what purpose it has yet. im trying to figure if you can fill windows in

The forest never held the players hand this game has given more help but still expect to figure it out on your own. Wrong type of game if you want to be told how to do things

been trying to figure out how to build a door out of the defensive walls. in the book it says you can but cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it happen. ive got an entire defensive wall compound but with no entrance or exit
lostsoul9999 Feb 23, 2023 @ 3:16pm
this building system is ♥♥♥♥, following the diagram perfectly it wont let me build a door for my walls, besides that the ai gets stuck on the walls forever unless i destroy them,

I guess some people just 'get it' faster than others. Kelvin and I have a cabin and 2 beds. I'm at the beach, and had my first encounter with Virginia, which was cool.
