The point is valid though. Fresh water is incredibly common, has zero down sides to just drinking from the ground, and you can get a canteen. Theres almost nowhere on the island you can't get nearby water.
I've run almost half the islands coast now, and the only places without a puddle, pond, lake, or stream are desolate and void of content. There'd be no reason to build there.
It's 100% possible that the shell was added in as an Easter egg or call back to the first game.
This. Please. I even read a short guide that said it will gather water if you place it on the ground, but didn't say what button. Even pressing the assigned "drop" button just puts it back in my inventory. Nothing puts it down.
