Not quite what you asked but you can add stuff to your backpack and hold I to access those things more quickly than going all the way in to your inventory

hold what? the stuff goes in our backpack without any indication of what key its set to

system is different, there is no quick select for 1,2,3,4 instead you add items to your backpack like you did in the first game but instead of applying quick slots you hold down i (hold not press that just takes you into the inventory) and then you pull your bag out with items added to it and select what you need from there
