Save games
Hi people, !!
I change my hard drive to ssd, I install steam with Unreal Gold but I notice that the save game don´t restore. Why steam not transfers the save games?

You can find save files in the folder "Save" in UnrealGold folder (or whatever is the name of Steam released folder). Now I don't know how it exactly works, but in the user.ini file, which is in the System subfolder and you can open it with notepad, is part named "[UnrealShare.UnrealSlotMenu]", under which are save slots. But I don't know how add there your save, because in my case, for example the slots are named "SlotNames[2]=Approaching Vortex Rikers 20:13 July 8
SlotNames[3]=Saved game
SlotNames[4]=Saved game
SlotNames[5]=Saved game
SlotNames[6]=Saved game
SlotNames[1]=Iris Challenge - Nexus 20:58 July 8
SlotNames[8]=Saved game
SlotNames[0]=Iris Challenge - Nexus 20:58 July 8
SlotNames[7]=..Empty..", which are either names of the maps (in my case custom ones), or "Saved game" or just "..Empty..", so you may check the Google for transfering saves.

Or you may just try to open save file in game's console through the command "open".

EDIT: Or, maybe just easier, is to find the save file which you have left from your older installation (if you didn't remove them), which can be called like "Save0.usa", double click on it and when OS asks you which program you want to open it with, choose "Unreal", or "Find another application in this computer" and start the save file through the "Unreal.ex" in the UnrealGold/System subfolder. In this case the game should normally load your save and you can save it again normally through game to make it work properly.

EDIT2: And if you lost your save and don't want to start new game again, you can open the map which you last played (if you remember its name or how it looked) through the "open" command in game's console, or again, go to "UnrealGold\Maps" subfolder and open the map which you think was last played through the Unreal.exe, as I mentioned with saves. You may also find there subfolder "UPak", which are maps from the expansion pack Return to Na pali. And after opening the map, you can use cheats to get items which you had in the last save (don't forget about the translator) and you can also continue :-) from your "last save".

You can copy your saves in the saves folder...
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Barely any older games support the Cloud.

Trying to do this.

I played some of Unreal Gold last year. Since then I bought a bigger drive for my Steam drive.

I installed Unreal Gold today on my new Steam drive. Tried to load a save, but all slots were empty.

I googled for the save file location, to see if the save files were still there. Weirdly there is a straight forward save file location answer from google, apart from this one.

I found the Unreal Gold files on my new drive after installation. However since save files are stored on the Steam drive, there would be no save files on my new Steam drive.

In a sense I was lucky because my old Steam drive is still not wiped. However when I look at the Unreal Gold folder on my old Steam drive, there is only one folder called System. In that folder is one file. A 7.69KB text document called Unreal. It doesn't have any save-data.

Whereas on my new Steam drive, under the fresh installation of Unreal Gold is a set of folders. Directx9c, Help, Manual etc, and it includes the System folder, that has lots of files in it.

My entire old Steam drive is in-tact, and filled with games. Yet the Unreal Gold stuff I need is not there.

Like where has all the installation and data gone from my old Steam drive. Unless it was stored in a different place last year which is unlikely.

Am wondering if it's worth all the hassle, or restarting. I already restarted it last year after accidentally saving while in the menu. Meaning quick load just sent me to the menu.

Ended up restarting. Then found that there was a patch so installed that. Then found my save games did not show up in the save slots.

I looked in the save file and the saves were there. I went back to the Load menu, and hit where the saves should have been. Nothing happened. However one time I noticed that the music had changed, so maybe the game had loaded. It actually did load however but the picture stayed on the menu. Hitting Esc cleared that.

Once I was in the game, I hit quick-save and hard-save. From then on it loaded normally from those files.

At times I was wondering if it was even worth it. However once you get playing, you can't help liking it again. Even though the format is simple, it's my kind of linear game.
