Unreal Gold

Unreal 3, anyone?
I know it's likely a pipe dream at this point, but would you dig a new SP Unreal game?

My reasoning is like this - first Unreal was a "breakthrough" game and also premiered the Unreal Engine, Unreal 2 was a bit so-so but still enjoyable and pushed the Unreal Engine 2 nicely, Unreal 3 didn't happen in the Unreal Engine 3 era because Epic had another big SP IP out, Gears of War, now it's Unreal Engine 4 era and Epic has no SP IP outside of maybe Gears 4, which does not exactly fill the gap for a cool new SP-oriented Sci-Fi FPS title.

What I realize is that Unreal 3 is unlikely to happen, since the new UT already is being put to the sideways in favour of more successful new IPs like Fortnite, but if Epic does not feel the need to push for a new SP Unreal game, I'm sure there's a desire existing in the community.

Hi Noobean,

I would love to see an Unreal 3 sp using the Unreal 4 engine but the way things are at Epic I think you will find that they are more into current trends like battle royale at the moment and are doing very well with Fortnite

Not sure if you know this but there is a UNREAL VR currently being worked on by Unreal enthusiasts.

The Unreal intro using Unreal 4 engine is GREAT very well done to you
how long did it take you to put together ?

Well, this wasn't made by me, I just posted this vid since it looks pretty cool to see the Unreal 1 intro remade in UE4.

Didn't know about "Unreal VR", I'll check that out.

Thanks for your reply.
They’d make a lot of money with an Unreal remake sold in stores or on Steam. It’s a triple A shooter, it’ll sell regardless of previous reputation, and considering Unreal’s amazing locations the graphics would entice many.

I don't think, thaat's going to happen. At least not from Epic. They don't care about Unreal anymore. As for a community effort, I don't think so either. Just look at how UT4 is coming along. Not a good sign, but we can always dream.

It would probably have to be made by another developer, because Epic is now focusing mainly on multiplayer games. Digital Extremes is my pick since they already have experience with the series and know what made Unreal so great.

I could care less, really. Even if they did decided to create a new game in the series, the name and maybe some creature\weapon designs would be the extent of what it could possibly have in common with Unreal.

While in theory, this could be the perfect time to release Unreal 3 - DOOM 4 was very well received and Quake is sticking to multiplayer for now, leaving room for a new Unreal title to be the next big old-school shooter revival game (and it's unlikely that a Half-Life game would steal the spotlight from Unreal this time) - I really don't think that's going to happen for one major reason: Fortnite. I don't think Epic cares, or even needs to care, about any other franchises at this time and that's unlikely to change for several years. Fortnite would continue to make more money than any singleplayer game they could release even if they just stopped working on it altogether. Unreal was moved into multiplayer territory 20 years ago and Epic has never made an attempt to bring it back to singleplayer and now even the latest Unreal Tournament has pretty much been abandoned. It's a shame because considering how beautiful and atmospheric the original game was, the imagination of the people who worked on it combined with modern technology could create something fascinating again, but in a market completely dominated by multiplayer games I doubt they'd take the risk of returning to a franchise whose singleplayer branch died two decades ago (I'm not counting Unreal 2 because... well, it's Unreal 2) and was always overshadowed by other games. The only real hope of a new Unreal is if they sell the franchise rights to someone else but that seems unlikely because the name is strongly associated with Epic's signature engine.

Yeah, a modern Unreal SP game with modern tech could have been great.

Anyways, here's some more Unreal 1 stuff ported to Unreal Engine 4 in what appears to be playlable state:

considering fortnite will probably be dead in a year or so I'd say we shouldn't yet give up hope for the unreal series, even if ut4 hasn't gotten an update for over a year.

Considering reputation wouldnt have much to do with that XD Imean, Unreal was super well recieved, alot more then quake 2

& UT4's development is in dev hell atm. The team is more focusing on fortnite rather then UT4. I can understand that but meh, I dont play to much bR from pUBG.

I think they made "Fortnite" with that purpose...

Anyways, we're not really talking about Unreal *Tournament* here, but it's single-player oriented brother, Unreal.

Well in a lot of ways you, or anyone for that matter, could make a very comparable take on a sequel. Especially seeing as how the engine is so accessible to anyone who would be willing to do so...

That's quite a massive undertaking, but you are right, it's the most likely that a remake, a semi-sequel, or a successor in spirit emerges from the community or some "fans gone crowd funded indie devs" case.

Epic themselves probably don't have too much interest for the Unreal brand anymore, outside of developing the engine tech and sharing it with every potential developer out there.
