1. You don't have a visible bar to measure the effect of curse.
2. Stamina regenerates immediately whereas curse has a recovery delay.
(The curse recovery delay is refreshed by ascending)
If your stamina bar is full and you're not using your stamina, then your stamina regeneration is wasted. If your stamina bar is empty, then you will receive a punishment. The same thing goes for the effect of curse.
--------------------------------------------------------
The goal of managing this invisible curse bar should be:
1. Avoid emptying it so you won't get hit with the curse
2. Avoid resting when you're not affected by the curse
3. Take a route where you receive as little recovery delay as possible
Leaving current area always fills your curse bar (removes curse effect), so you don't rest when you know that you can reach an entrance before you are hit with the curse.
