Ut 2004 custom Assault maps
Hi so I got game again, refreshed most of assault, onslaught and custom assault maps. Hard to tell which is my Favorite, liked so many actually
BP2 maps like outback or subrosa are still kicking ass as well as blazingchase, magmaassault or island strike.... Utopia..
Abyss-lite was insane too but without bots unfortunately

My questions are:
1) why aren't there more epic asssault maps? Excluding fake AS maps (hidden bunnytrack /bunnyhop...), unfinished ones, races like hellbendezerrace and maps without bot paths support there is handful of 50 or even less.
Did mappers gave up mapping years ago? I could understand though, it seemed like a ton of work put in most of them.
Some of them were also probably fully designed for multiplayer matches I guess

2) whats ur other Favorite custom AS maps?

3) Final question, are custom onslaught maps worth download? There are too many to bother (over 200), usually are too large to enjoy playing alone and most of them doesnt even have bots support I suppose.

Any hints regarding upper points much appreciated, especially about died mapping part. Cheers!

The problem with Assault (its not just ffor 2004) is that the mode just wasnt populair enough and bot support wasnt top prio for 2004.



If a map doesnt support bot support, then the mapper intended it for multioplayer use.

AS Trials maps ("fake assault" as you call them) were my main reason for playing UT2004 back in the day. So much fun, even if I was always bad at them. I wish I could remember the name of one map, where the first objective was to get someone in a Scorpion and everyone load it with spider mines to launch it to the next platform. There'd always be someone trolling by detonating them early sending the Scorpion into the abyss and I'd be laughing my ass off the entire time. Good times

Well, here's my two cents:

1: Assault maps are incredible hard and time consuming to make, if they should be considered worth playing. It takes alot of planning to make it work right. Even more if you want bots to work with it. You have to think of alot things to make it immersible, so you really fight to win the map. I've made some maps for UT2k4 and tried many times to do an Assault map, but failed every time, because I didn't had the patience to work out a solid backstory and plan out the objectives. I think, this is the reason, there aren't many costum maps developed. It's too much work.

2: AS-BP2-Acatana, AS-Overlord2k4 and AS-Zirconium.

3: I don't play Onslaught much. Like all vehicle- based games in UT2k4, they work best with live players. Bots should never had aquired a drivers license.

Yeah, Its funny how UT99 got the smartes bots for its time, but 2k4 lacked lots :p

2k4 lacked smart bots? In comparison the bots have far more movement options in jumps, dodge, vehicles, etc. 2k3 was the first game combining all of these. And there is this almost a decade after it's launch and that cannot be said from other games: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/gaming-ai-appears-to-be-human

I'm not saying im happy with the bot levels, but there is good ground for a different opinion.

You can have opinion all you want but 2k4 bot was a downgrade and what your listed was a mere compotition that didnt need to be listed because I said for theyr time.... lol

I dont think I said it lacket smart bots.

Bots in basically any game are totally worthless for a lot of the game modes present in 2004

UT99 bots may appear smarter because they aren't having their stupidity in those situations exposed

Z.Ibrahimovic and others around here are actually quite knowledgeable about how UT series games work. UT2004's bots are actually quite a bit more complex than in UT99, but in both games, the bots can do very little without support built in by the mapper.

A good level designer really can do magic

Too bad there wasn't much done to make them useful in most UT2004 game modes. It's even worse in UT3

I didnt trigger anything in this post but you apparantly because you inmediatly jumped into the defence of bots in 2004 by linking a compotition for bots that is irrelevant.

It appears to me that you do not know what you are babbeling about nor what you are responding on. The university link directly inflicts on your statement. Try to look up their study and learn why they chose 2k4 bots/ai over many other and newer available choices. I didn't find the report for you. It might be removed from being published publicly.
