Its been a long time since I played but as far as I remember, you can solo the campaign, invite friends and/or leave the "lobby" open for anyone searching for campaign games, if they join it becomes coop.

after playing UT 3:Black UT 2004 and UT 2014 i have concluded that UT 3:Black has the largest player base
UT2004 might have more players but as much as I loved it back in the day, it has not aged well gameplay-wise or graphics.
