Do people still play?
Thinking about buying. How fast to get into a match?

This game was never played much online; it was a huge failure because it was so horribly consolized - the user interface, server browser, and all sorts of other things I've long forgotten about were god-awful or broken. I bought the game the first week it was released and paid very close attention to it, and I don't remember ever seeing more than 600 people online, and if I saw 500 it was probably the peak.

Actually, the peak was close to 1,000 and today it averages 50 or so. The game is over 10 years old! Many new games wish they averaged 50 players.
In terms of the UI, most experienced UT3 players used Mapmixer which was amazing.
I will say that online players are more often bots than real players. Playing against bots is fun.

I would characterize a game released in the past two years intended for online multiplayer having fewer than 500 people online concurrently as a complete failure.

Older versions of UT had better bots. These are just very poorly coded, no randomness, just blatant aimbotting to an impossible degree. Seeing a bot with a link gun within range of its alt-fire means you're already dead, watching bots take out redeemers from across a map with the enforcer within a second of launching it, having bots land perfect shock combos while dodging in and around structures is silly, and that's just poor design.

Still a must play for LAN parties. Yeah us old folks still do those.

you can play with bots, still fun

wut? u think bout buying?
the hell r u crazy? o.O ... go play the new UE4 UT, its pre-alpha but free, movement feels great again =)
UT3 felt somehow clumsy and those barockesque designs where a total fail... do not buy for more than 5€ id say... anyways go for a boxed disc version if u need to buy it, then for the collection^^^

lol

Its either UT4 or UT 2K4 really ;( Shame cause this game has so many cool vehicles and it looks great graphicly. I know I thought so when my dad played it back when I was 7. Still fun regardless.

They need unlimited internet acess, my procesor barely can keep up this game to 60 fps
Game is to much in china style, menu looks avfull, registrations, serials keys, gameplay. i dont like it. not worth to spend money for this game.

There are around 60 dedicated servers (with fixed IPs), only two of which are active during certain hours of the day. BestEU© Pro VCTF Server is the server I've been playing on for months now. It averages around 12-14 players at around 3PM EST. Players mostly log on between 1PM and 5PM EST. The demographic is mostly european players, as the server itself is hosted in Germany, so I play with a fairly high ping (115). Only Vehicle Capture the Flag maps on this server, though.

Official Epic UT3 Warfare #2 is the second-most active server (mostly on weekends). It averages around 10 players. US Server; Warfare mode only.

If, at any point, you want to know how many players are on any of the servers, go to this link:
https://www.gametracker.com/search/ut3/

It tells you how many, which players exactly, and what map is currently playing in real-time.

If you don't have the previous games already, you may want to wait for a sale. Around christmas I got this in a bundle with the original UT, UT2k4, Unreal Gold and Unreal 2 for something like $1.50
UT99 is best and UT4 used to show promising but then they did completely idiotic stuff that they added Grenade Launcher in to UT. What! They know Quake is about single wpns + combining and that UT has always been about altfire. You got altfire in RL thats why you don't add Grenade Launcher into UT lol. And not to mention altfire of Flak cannon just makes you question, what the f*ck you gonna use Grenade Launcher for..

Rarely have I seen more than 30 or 40 people playing at a time and usually during some event that is set up in the evenings, mostly everyone who plays now is on Ut2004. Ut3 had lots of potential but extremely sluggish in movement and most people got use to 2k4's speed and mods its just the best all time version of Unreal and so many games came from it. Ut4 has the same issue Ut3 had lack of mobility, sluggish feeling. The graphics didnt mean anything it was all about the exciting gameplay and they just overlook why Unreal was popular in the first place ut99 was good for its time but 2k3 was better and then they added onslaught and larger maps and vehicles ability to create your own maps and objects in game and distribute it to the rest of the community and 2k4 took off and they chased that hype to ut4 and it didnt work, couldnt even give the game away for free, was all about the speed and "adrenaline". Although ut3 was pretty to look at it didnt have it and i still play it but 2k4 is the best fps game hands down.

UT 2003 was a huge failure relative to UT99 and a great many UT99 players were very disappointed with UT 2003 if not angry. I remember one clanner who posted a photo of his UT 2003 game box being set on fire.

UT 2004 was a good game for Onslaught and Invasion-RPG, but it failed for non-PvE on-foot games such as CTF and Bombing Run. UT 2004 only had a fraction of the online player counts UT99 had as well as a fraction of the competitive activity such as organized leagues and CTF PUG matches. In contrast, you could find UT99 CTF PUG matches and even an organized CTF draft league up until a few years ago. When I bought UT 2004 in early 2006, the CTF servers - the flagship game of UT99 - were empty as were the Bombing Run servers. My theory is that the floaty-dodgey movement put too much of an emphasis on hitscan, so the on-foot PvP games just weren't much fun for most players in UT 2004.
