Well that's weird. Even when the Smith says you have crappy armor and he needs to provide better armor for you? The stats don't change? You sure about that?
But the new armours you will get regardless threw game so I assume better stats the quicker you get em.
Like KillerAtWar said, it carries over. What I meant by just a cosmetic change is that you don't switch Armor and there is only one ingame - meaning you upgrade it, but don't got multiple to choose from..
Sorry if I didn't made it more clear what I meant...
