Ascend Follow Ritual
Whenever I perform this ritual it seems rather nice. There is a white light and the follower rises into the sky with an angelic note.

However, when I see it used online. The white light is a red light instead and you can see the follower's bones and meat falling to the floor...

What decides if the ascension ritual will be good or evil? It is good every time I use it. Why is it evil for others?

I've ascended some old followers, then decided to revive them later with the resurrect ritual. So, the resurrect ritual can be used no matter how the follower died as far as I can tell. Failed missionary run? Revive them. Die of old age and you bury them or harvest their meat? Revive them. Ascend or sacrifice ritual them? Revive them.

But back on topic, I've only seen the white light nice version in my play through so far.
If you revive old followers, do they remain old?

Yes and no, they will keep their age but with a fresh young body.

No, they're youthened and live another lifetime, getting old again eventually and dying of old age. It keeps tracking their age from their original life, so if you keep resurrecting the same cultists you can get some that have had exceptional lifetimes.

So, anyone found out why some people have "red" ascencions and some "white"?

Personally, I suspect the "belief in the afterlife" affects it. I have belief in sacrifices, my wife has belief in afterlife. My ascensions are red, hers are white.

I think it's just random.
Highly doubt this .
I've got a 20+ hour run and in the beginning I'd usually get blood rain, but honestly I can't remember the last time I've seen that, as they've all been the angelic version for some time now . I assume it was some trait/perk or something like that .

From what I've heard, Ascended followers can't be resurrected.
You can resurrect ascended followers, been doing that frequently.

The very first time for me it was blood and bones, after that and every time after that it was the white light, not sure what changed it, I watched someone on twitch do it as well and it was the same, it's possible it was the belief trait was picked up after the first ritual.

I think that's what makes most sense. I only have one playthrough with the sacrifice belief, and it has always been red with meat rains. I wasn't even aware that there was a different version of that ritual

Still no definite answer, it seems.
I wish some of the doctrines were more specific.

It is, I never picked belief in sacrifice and I never got the red version one.

I'm certain it's Belief in Afterlife that triggers the heaven version, or at least that was the intention. Mine was always white and never deviated. I tried another run and took Sacrifice, and it was the evil variant. If you took the Afterlife Doctrine and are still seeing the bones & meat, I think it's bugged for you.

perhaps the game has some sort of hidden alignment system in place.
some people here said that they only got the red light once then never again, that was actually my first ascension lol. Confused the heck out of me cause i thought they were going to heaven or something then meat and bones happened but every time after that yeah no meat.

Cult doctrine DesensitisedToDeath also known as "belief in sacrifice" or "belief in the afterlife" is the definite answer.

I think it has to do with the amount of faith you have when you do the ritual. I've been getting both lights kind of alternating (not back and forth, but just random), and when I run a ritual beforehand to boost faith, the light has been white. More testing needed.
