Ascend Follow Ritual

Whenever I perform this ritual it seems rather nice. There is a white light and the follower rises into the sky with an angelic note.

However, when I see it used online. The white light is a red light instead and you can see the follower's bones and meat falling to the floor...

What decides if the ascension ritual will be good or evil? It is good every time I use it. Why is it evil for others?

I choose afterlife. Since I wanted to avoid sacrificing.

There's an Ascend ritual, and a Sacrifice ritual. You can actually get both, they're different choices. Sacrificing them is the evil looking, tentacles-from-the-floor ritual you'll see. Ascending is the nice looking one... Though the sound and the meat/bones falling from the ceiling seem to suggest it's maybe not as nice as it looks.

From what I've heard, Ascended followers can't be resurrected.

It only rains meat, if the ascend light is red, if its blue you only get faith.
So the question is, what makes it red for some and blue for others?

Yes, I know there are two different rituals. That is not what I am talking about here....

Okay to reexplain it; the "Ascend Follower Ritual" has two different versions. In one version there is a white light and no body parts....in the evil version there is a red light and body parts. Neither of them have tentacles like the sacrifice ritual. Because that is a different ritual I was not even talking about...

Weird. I've only seen the white light version of it in my playthrough so far. Now I am curious too.

Just a theory, but maybe's it's tied to getting the "Belief in afterlife" trait? I think trying to ascend people when you have no afterlife might just be a nicer way of sacrificing..

I've used this ritual about 5 times in total, and 4 of the times it was the red, turn them into meat version, and 1 time it was the white, turn them into souls version.

I think it's just random.

If its random, I am getting very lucky to get the white/good version every single time.

I think the others are on to something and it having to do with previous choices

Having only whites too. Perhaps dissenters and ones close get red?
I ascended old and young, low and high levels so far all with same result.

I've ascended some old followers, then decided to revive them later with the resurrect ritual. So, the resurrect ritual can be used no matter how the follower died as far as I can tell. Failed missionary run? Revive them. Die of old age and you bury them or harvest their meat? Revive them. Ascend or sacrifice ritual them? Revive them.

But back on topic, I've only seen the white light nice version in my play through so far.

Considering the sound of this "ascension", you are not only right : The follower is just squished to the ceiling, and that's genius from devs.

I ascended a dissenter too and pretty much expected him to go in red. But no, I still got the white version.

If you revive old followers, do they remain old?
