Yeah, I have done that. That's not the issue. Simply that collecting them after every mission is excessively time consuming. If you have 2 farms it can take a lot of minutes just to get the food.
Huge oversight and should be readjusted in the future updates.
Just feels extremely frustrating when food is so highly demanded all the time. I do a ten minute run and then spend ten minutes collecting food. Having the upgraded farm make people collect food, means you have to wait so long just to get some really excessive tedious work out of the game.
Farm tier 2 auto collects all the food for me. So I go out, deposit the seeds into the boxes, and just collect all the food that's been auto harvested.
have seed boxes and fertilizer boxes next to my farms, with farm tier 2 it's automated, collects food, places seeds and fert down, they water and harvest and place in a box in-front of the building which I can collect from, I just have to fill the seed/fert boxes

I have no issue with gathering my own food until I progress in the tech tree so the followers can gather it for me.
You gather items while out in the dungeons. Do you want your followers to pick up items for you while in the dungeon too?
I was practically drowning in berries after I'd built up half a farm's worth of plots.
Watering's the frustrating one early on, since you need to water it multiple times, and if you don't it won't grow. So until you've got watering help, plants will only grow one step no matter how long you're in a dungeon.
If you've got problems with food, maybe see if you've got more followers than you need, choose the food options in dungeons, maybe even take it into account when making doctrines.
When/If you approach ten followers it will be a good idea to have two farms, i have 12 followers currently and i absolutely need two farms to make it work :)
Also fishing is a decent alternative, though i lack recipes for a lot of the fish i catch.
