It's like Steam thinks there's 5 controllers attached all at the same time. The "controller detected" popup flashes a number of times.
I'm trying out the demo.
Disconnecting USB resolved the issue for me.
Steam Input on macOS needs two permissions, ideally. First, it needs you to grant Input Monitoring for it to have global controller input, if you want to grant this. This one may or may not be mandatory.
The important one for Steam Input reporting profiles that configure controller inputs, however, is Accessibility. You may find that Steam has requested this, but not been granted the permission. Turn it on, and Steam will be able to send controller inputs to games. This one is definitely mandatory for profiles that send controller inputs, and probably also keyboard and mouse bindings from Steam Input as well.
