In my opinion, every single fleece in the game is basically useless. I do unlock them as soon as I can, but they all come with such major downsides that they end up being more of a burden than a benefit. I feel like the fleeces are meant to enhance your playstyle — for example, if you're skilled enough in combat that you rarely get hit, the Golden Fleece can be great since it doubles your damage output, even though it also increases the damage you take.

Still, I found this mechanic really disappointing, especially considering how much effort it takes to unlock each fleece in the first place.
cowboy fleece i said it cowboy fleece is the best

Any fleece the boost curses is good. The curse only fleece is pretty fun unless you snag a curse that's terrible for single damage on a boss because then they take forever.

You could also take the fleece that boosts curses but halves melee damage so that way you can still deal decent damage to the boss if you have a good mob spell but bad boss spell.

also, random unrelated question, which doctrine path is the best to start going down
Berskerer Fleece, that one which increases damage dealt 10 times, but also makes you a one hit KO target without resurection during combat (so REALLY BAD if you do the "perma-death run"), is great, if you ever will want to go after "No Damage" achivements for bosses, especially that you will unlock the possibility to teleport straight to them after clearing first section, since the only problem will be getting to the boss.

Since you cant get hit during the boss fight for these, having the power to kill any boss with like 2 combos, especially daggers, before they can even do anything, is so great and makes those achievements so easy.

When I can get it I like the fleece of the hobbled heels (i think that's what its called) it increases your movement speed but you are unable to roll/dodge. I think it also gives you some extra hearts when you go into new rooms
I personally enjoy using the fleece of hobbled heels as it gives a lot of max health movement speed and gives 1 heart after beating a room and I don't mind not being able to roll.
the yellow fleece is really good if you are careful you can just obliterate bosses, and if you arent you still have hearts to rely on unlike berserker

personally i recomend the blue heart fleece for a beginner its gives you 1.5x the amount of hearts but they are blue which means you cant heal them. still a great fleece tho.

definitely pick the death doctrine first because your followers wont be scared when a cult memeber dies

good luck!

Personally, I always use the Tarot Card fleece since it's the only one that doesn't really have a downside.
It gives you 4 Tarot cards at the start of a crusade, which can make you seriously overpowered if you get good ones. Plus, it saves me the trouble of hunting down Tarot rooms—huge time-saver.

It fits best with my risky and random way of fighting, where I just go in and adapt on the fly.

If I want extra hearts, I use demons instead. I get the benefits without needing a health-focused fleece, and turning hot-headed followers, snorers, or really just any annoying ones into demons saves a lot of trouble.

PS: if you like the aesthetics of other fleeces more you can change it in game to look like another fleece

The purple fleece doesn't really have an actual downside, as long as you remember to roll out of the poison
