I've advise to NOT use any basic fertilizer on your crops at all during the early game. Save it for later because there's a special 3 follower hut that you can make that's very good but it costs 10 poop a piece. So it's better to just keep saving those resources up as the building is more important, especially if you wanna make a lot of them
If you're having problems with focusing on the actions of your cult and then your crusades, I'd advice to have it so time freezes in your cult when doing crusades. Some people like to always have it on, others feel that it's kinda "cheaty" but that's up to you not what someone else thinks. I like it's a good option for someone that just wants to focus on both the cult and the crusades on their own merits than being forced to rush through either to hurry back to the other
There's a lot of options to sacrifice followers for your benefits so don't feel too bad if you get a follower that just flat out sucks. Make them look 'ugly' or call them something silly like 'fodder' so that way you know those are the ones you can freely kill/sacrifice. It's something you can't avoid later in the game so it's good information to know in advance as when you get to the sacrifice screen it's very vague on what each follower is or does, it relies on you knowing in advance
If you find the crusades start to get too hard you can always spend more time in your cult to led some days pass letting you preform more sermons which will perma buff your character and make them stronger and stronger letting your next crusades be easier
For your doctrines there are five options you can pick from: sustenance, afterlife, work & worship, law & order and possessions. I'd advise to not worry about afterlife until later. It really only helps when your followers die or are dead. None of which helps you out early on at all. Work & Worship is one of the best options to start into IMO as it gives you the choice between 15% more devotion or 15% more work speed either one being a really good boon to have. The next level makes your bless action way stronger. After that I'd probably go into sustenance up to level 2 and from there just have fun picking whatever else.
As the game starts to expand you will open up new zones that you can travel to and some of those zones have the option to buy new Tarot cards. I'd advise AGAINST buying any unless you *really* like the bonus that it has to offer. Your Tarot card deck starts out very slim and trim which lets you get the good options more easier. As the game expands and more cards are thrown into your deck it gets very fat and unwieldy making it much harder to hope to get the good cards from it as you've gone from 20 cards to 60-80 cards in the deck. So don't fluff it up even more by buying Tarot cards that give you bonuses that you don't care about or won't use. It'll just make your crusades harder if you get the crappy bonuses over the good ones
Anyways, that's all I can think of at the moment
