best first fleece?

i just got my first item to unlock a fleece and im curious which one I should get. some of them have like good buffs but also bad debuffs and im wondering which one has the best tradeoff. i considered the 1.5x blue hearts instead of all hearts bc i hardly ever get hearts in my runs.

Bear with me, this may be a lot to read.

For reference, the fleeces are more or less sidegrades rather than direct upgrades, given they all have upsides and downsides. It is worth mention that post-game, you unlock more fleece options, but for your current ones, your best choice depends on a couple of factors, so I'll just explain.

The golden fleece allows you to infinitely snowball damage, to the point of possible one shotting, depending on weapon of choice, having incredible synergy with the dagger and sword if you can scale it up, however getting hit once automatically resets it and you take a full heart of damage instead of half. If you aren't confident with your dodge abilities, then don't get this one.

The green fleece entirely depends on if you like spellcasting, and if you can manage not taking as much damage as you might normally, so that would be up to you.

The purple fleece used to be a direct upgrade until they changed its downside, you get a diseased heart on every tarot card but a poison puddle spawns underneath you when you take damage. The simple counter is every time you take damage, immediately roll to negate the downside, or just find the tarot card that gives poison immunity. If you can simply remember rolling after a hit, then you'll be fine.

The white fleece exists, the 4 instant tarot cards is nice, however you can't get more, and said tarot cards are randomized. It's really good if you have unlocked the teleport back to cult button and are just doing a quick quest for a follower without really caring about finishing the crusade, otherwise it's there if you want it.

I can't speak for the blue fleece since I've never used it, however all it really does is give you a few extra hearts, but they can't be replenished if you find a healing area or get hearts from a chest. Yes, hearts from a chest is rare, however more often than not I find myself obtaining some means of healing, even just from the batch of weapons that can heal you on kill, which I assume they can't with this fleece. Basically, just think of yourself as slightly more tanky but you can only heal if you somehow get more blue hearts.

So, in my personal opinion, the white fleece is probably the best starter fleece, while the purple and blue fleece are also good options if you can manage the downsides, and the green fleece is really a matter of if you like curses more than your weapon or not.
