Texture pack/sprite edit support?

Cult of the Lamb gave me the inspiration to try customizing the Lamb sprites, but as I started gearing up to actually make the edits beyond the concept stage, I found that there doesn't seem to be a way to do this at the moment. A surprise to me, as most of the games I play have texture packs in the modding community at the bare minimum.
If anyone either knows how to accomplish this, or if the Devs would be willing to work towards making this more accessible, I'd love to hear it! I think the fleeces could look amazing as moth wings draped around the body...

I'm not sure, I saw a wip of a mod for someone making there own follower but I haven't seen or heard anything about it since so it might be possible ?
