You actually want him to lose faith or to dissent and be able to re-educate him. I personally put him in the stocks. Anyway, you basically force him to go through withdrawals and when he's done dissenting the mushroom on the top of his head falls off and he comes back to his senses and thanks you for helping him. You get an achievement for it called help sozo. I actually discovered this accidentally just because I had low loyalty with my cult. You can force this though by refusing to give him mushrooms and not have any mushrooms crops growing. You don't need to do the mushroomo quest at all. You don't get any achievement for it and all Sozo does is eat him and then later requests you to find another one again.
Oh, I don't know, I've had one mate with a follower and hatched a mushroomo... Sadly, Sozo did eat the kid when I thought he didn't count... But thanks to this thread, I will be sure to put him through withdraws.
Seems like there should be multiple paths for this like accept the quest then ignore it for too long rather than it forcing you to do outright refusal. After all I think the evil cult leader would have no problem promising more drugs while plotting something else like prison.
