Summoning demons to fight The One Who Waits

I tried to summon 3 demons to help me fight The One Who Waits and I can summon them at my home base. However, when I perform the ritual to fight TOWW, they show up as regular followers again. They don't appear at all during the fight, but when I get back, they're exhausted like they went with me. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it a problem with the latest update or something? It's kind of softlocking me from completing the main story now...

I think that is intended from a lore standpoint, since TOWW captures your cult and holds them hostage as punishment for you betraying him.

I could be wrong and it is an unintended problem, at least the followers being exhausted, but that is just my opinion. I do not usually use summon demons (I keep forgetting to do so), but I can see the problem you are having.

I would suggest trying to use the tarot card fleece and the hammer or axe for weapons, but I usually play defensively.

I think you're generally supposed to fight The One Who Waits on your own-- without the help of your cultists, especially since the stakes of this fight are either you win and become god, or you die and the One Who Waits sacrifices your cult. It's you vs the boss. Tarot card fleece and some weapon that does high damage will be your best friends in this.
