I know you are talking just the first level, but I suggest you think on what you need mid or late game by maxing the doctrines you need. Without paying much attention to the very first one you pick. It would still help you in some way, just to get to the doctrine you need the most.
Need resurrection or calming your followers every time some one dies. Go after life. Not to mention maxing it to unlock the graves, makes it an easy 2 faith with each follower grieving at a grave.
Need a lot of money for free (ritual of enrichment). Level possessions. One quick tip. Bribe follower is not good, it only raises very little their loyalty. Very bad early game when you don't have a lot of money, even if you had a lot of money it's still not good.
Want a free out of jail card if your faith is way too low, have problems keeping your faith high. Max Work and Worship for the holy day ritual.
Want another free out of jail card if you forgot to feed your followers. Get the first level of sustenance for the feasting ritual. Worth it if you don't feel like cooking for a couple of days. I don't use much the rest of the sustenance doctrines by exception of the mushroom consumption by maxing sustenance.
Want to get married or just need some one to keep your cultists loyal. Go law and order. The loyalty enforcer helps keeping your people in check. Once you max law and order.
Specially if you level cultists that can turn into bomb demons. They deal a lot of damage if they are old and have very high levels.
Edit. By old I mean their age, not them being useless old men with a cane.
but they both rank 2.
so need advice on their Rank 1s
Afterlife: Ritual Sacrifice will give a lot of exp to you, but without "Belief in Sacrifice Trait" your cult will lose a lot of faith after sacrifice. At the same time you will lose faith if an old man dies frome age.
Work & Worship: I think Faithful Trait is more useful late game,
Law & Order: Ascend Follower Ritual will give a lot of exp to your cult members, if you want to make some strong demons. If not - Murder is more useful in getting rid of followers you don't need, but you can just poison them insteard.
Possessions: Bribe Follower will give a little exp to members you like, but if you not using demons its useless. Both useless, imo.
I really think Demons (Demonic Summoning Circle) are underrated and can help more than they seem, try leveling cultists and experimenting with a set of demons - this will make your game more diverse.
Feasting and Fasting are rather simillar. Fasting is more powerfull (if cooldowns are same - not sure about it) as it will let you go on crusade freely if ritual is ready but feasting lets you fully feed whole cult saving simillar 3 days worth of food so you can allways precook some when go away adventuring. Still when you get grass feed and easier food access later Feasting is less helpfull but Fasting is good fire and forget option for long runs. Guess minmaxing Ritual Fast is better. I run Feasts, love how it looks.
