Cult of the 'Lamb'
Hello!

Is it possible we can change the look of our main character? Perhaps to one of the other animals similar to how you can customise your followers? I think it would be a great addition and help make each cult feel unique.

I 100% understand and agree that it makes no sense to be able to change the Lamb into something other than a sheep. After all, the first bit of dialogue explains that all of the others of the main character's species have apparently already been sacrificed. That said, technically a ram would still fit, as a ram is nothing more than a male sheep and a lamb is a young sheep. Personally, I do agree with Miroku on the idea of customizing how the Lamb looks appearance wise. Like colors or accessories (unless the in-game items you collect can affect the Lamb's appearance) Maybe black wool, or pink as a Minecraft reference. Maybe white or peach skin instead of black. Perhaps make them unlockables earned through gameplay. It's not a necessity but it would be a nice addition, even if added later instead of at launch.

Its a singleplayer game, why would it matter to others what skin i use for my own character?
Dont Starves Story is about Wilson, yet you can choose dozens of different characters.
And why not?
Its a service to the player.

Great feedback. Customisation won't be on launch, but it's definitely something that will be discussed.

Which is what I wanted.

Having the main character be anything else but the lamb would actually kill the story aspect and the symbolism they are going for. Now maybe make how the lamb looks customizable perhaps but to change it from the lamb would make zero sense

True. The game is Cult of the Lamb. Not Cult of the Ram, or Snake or Bat.
so, as Miroku mentioned, customizable Lamb as a compromise? Retains the important lamb aspect while encouraging that personal touch.

Devs have already confirmed in a QnA that they have no plans on customizing the race of the main character due to the game being 'Cult of the Lamb' and the symbolism the Lamb brings to the story.
That being said, they haven't turned down the idea of customizing the Lamb's outfit or the outfit the Cult wears.

The only reason not to implement it is that there are more important things to implement first. Otherwise character customisation is a great feature to add to any game.

The simplest thing to add would be different colours. Instead of a white lamb you could be black, brown, pink, as examples. Adding this alone already adds some personal touch to each player's lamb and let's them form a greater bond and get more immersed in the game.

You can go one step further by changing the clothing too. This again could be changing the colour of it on both the lamb and the followers. You could also come up with different shapes and styles though.

The biggest thing to customise though would be the species. Your followers can be all sorts of different animals but the lamb is confined to being a sheep. There are good examples above that players would like to be their cult leader - goats, toads, cats. The argument that the game is called Cult of the Lamb and therefore the main character must be a lamb is what I hinted at in my title yet it isn't right at all.

Firstly, a lamb is a baby sheep. If that sheep grows up, it's no longer a lamb. Boom, you've got to keep the main character young forever. On a more serious note, obviously the developers chose the lamb as to have the main character be a 'sacrificial lamb'. Now, historically a sacrificial lamb is literally a lamb that is sacrificed to a god. However, as we aren't in medieval times anymore, the meaning of a sacrificial lamb has grown to be much more than that. If you look for a definition on the internet, you may find "A sacrificial lamb is a metaphorical reference to a person or animal sacrificed for the common good."

So the sacrificial lamb doesn't have to be a lamb. They can be any person or animal being sacrificed. The game title still works and everyone is happy. Now, the best way to implement this would be to have the character still start as the lamb, then let them change their character later on through a building/upgrade or perhaps as a new game option after beating the first game. That way you still have the double entendre with 'Cult of the Lamb' and allow those who want to customise their character to do so. People who want to stick as the lamb simply need not change their character from the adorable sheep.

I'll end with a note about how I don't really mind if there's character customisation or not. I literally just played the demo, saw you could customise the followers and thought, "wouldn't it be cool if I could customise myself to be a black lamb/goat." The reason I've typed all this is that I do care about the way people think. I want to clear the misinformation and weak opinions to show that my idea IS possible and beneficial to all, whether the devs want to include it or not. I'd also like to say that instead of adding it directly, they could instead focus on modding support and the community can mod it in if it really is wanted. Surely I don't need to point out how amazing modding support is for a game - a lot of games would be dead without it.

I know there's different tunics! :)

The MM Priority is making the game the best it can be for launch, and then continue to sprinkle awesomeness into the game to build the lore of the lamb.

Maybe not as a customization, but what about a "new game +" option to allow the player to change his character to any other animal for a second playthrough?

Devs never confirmed anything about a NG+, it probably isn't on their workload atm.
And if it is, then the earlier comment about never changing animals would still apply.

Would love to just be able to customise my lamb a bit.

Ofc this isn't a deal breaker or anything just since we can do so for followers then it would be nice to have something like it for the lamb.
Buck Stedman Jun 16, 2022 @ 8:57pm
I definitely wanna be able to at least change my colors... People tend to really enjoy customization.

Been waiting for this since i saw the initial trailer... didn't realize there was a whole town management thing tho. Still excited for the game but with much more hesitation. My hopes are high though and I love that you are active with the community already. Bodes well for the future of the game
