Controller not works
I wanted to play the game again about 2 weeks ago and noticed that my controller was not being recognized

It works for all other games

Now I completely reinstalled Steam 2 days ago because I have a new PC (brand new) and the controller still doesn't work in this game

According to the Steam settings, the controller works, is recognized and I can continue to play other games with it

Only "Alone in the Dark" no longer works with the controller

And before the suggestion comes: I have already tried EVERYTHING in terms of controller settings...Steam input on and off, set up several templates for Steam Big Picture mode and even DS4Windows - nothing works 😡

I have the PS5 controller and I don't have any problem. Are you using it wireless? Have you upgraded the controller's firmware? Uninstalling steam doesn't remove every config file.

Believe me, I tried EVERYTHING

I spent 3 hours trying out every possibility. And as mentioned: in other games the controller works without any problems and the funny thing is: I played the game about 4 weeks ago and back then the controller worked

Hm... very odd. I've only heard one other report of this kind of issue, but I don't think we found a solution on that one. Do you have any other input devices attached by any chance, that might be recognized by the game, even if it's not a standard controller? For example, HOTAS frequently interfere with input recognition.

Maybe you can try deleting the "settings.sav" file:

1.- Set your Steam to Offline mode (to not automatically recover the config from the cloud)
2.- go to the following directory:
c:\users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\AloneInTheDark\Saved\SaveGames
3.- Delete the file "settings.sav" (make a copy if you want)
4.- Run the game and check if it works
5.- you can get back to online mode

short update on your suggestion: Unfortunately it did NOTHING, because this file does not exist - there is only "steam_autocloud.vdf" and a folder "settings" which does not contain anything

that is incredibly strange. If you launched the game even once (even just past the intro cinematic until you can control your character), you should have a settings.sav file in that folder, as that is where the game saves all your graphics settings etc.

When you get to that point and manually save your game, then close your game and relaunch it, does it actually save your progress? if not, the problem is not with controller compatibility, but rather your game not being able to access that folder.

so, this "setting.dave" file still doesn't exist after I got to the point where I control the character and can save myself.

And yes, if I save manually and restart the game, I can access/load autosave

I would like to mention again: I have played the game before and back then I was able to use the controller directly without having to adjust anything

Maybe windows defender/firewall or some Anti virus is preventing the game from saving stuff, or something else. It happened to me with another game.

Maybe you didn't notice: I've played the game before...and I can play other games normally too - why should Windows Defender cause problems now and only with one game and only in such a way that I can't use the controller with one game, even though I was able to use it normally the first time I played through it? Does it make sense that it should happen the second time and only with controller use and only with that one game? Answer: No, it doesn't make sense.

yes, an AV update or other stuff may break other software, also, as I've said, reinstalling Steam doesn't delete everything that you need to remove, there're a lot of stuff that could be going on, even a Steam bug triggered after a config modification. Who knows

It may be that not everything is removed when you delete it, but I have a new PC, so I completely reinstalled Steam - it's still strange that it's only this game and only the controller that doesn't work

There is some news...I've managed to get the game to finally display the PS4 button (as soon as I press a button on the controller) and the PS4 controller is even displayed in the controller settings.

Look here, a screenshot of the controller layout
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g6ARzVzNks6a3OmEXDgEwcoO9e16kt4a/view?usp=sharing

However, the controller is still unusable, no matter which button I press: it doesn't respond

That can't be true! I can play ANY game with the controller, except "Alone in the Dark". It worked before the last big update...but since the update it hasn't worked. I can't select a previous version either, can I ?
Lanani Jul 29, 2024 @ 7:01am
It is technically possible to play previous versions. Look up "old versions using Steam console" on Google and you will find instructions.

It is still incredibly weird that the game is not recognizing your controller. No idea which part of your specific hardware/software setup it is that is causing this issue for you and the one other user who reported it.

Oh, so I'm not the only one with this problem ?

I have now ordered the CD version so that I no longer have to rely on Steam for this game and then I should be able to enjoy it

But until the CD arrives, I will look for an old Steam version
RockyDragon7 Jul 29, 2024 @ 8:10am
an update: Updating a previous version didn't help - the problem still exists

As I already mentioned, I bought the game on CD and am now waiting for it to arrive in the mail and then I won't have to rely on Steam for this game anymore and hope that I can then use my controller as usual
