Believe me, I tried EVERYTHING
I spent 3 hours trying out every possibility. And as mentioned: in other games the controller works without any problems and the funny thing is: I played the game about 4 weeks ago and back then the controller worked
1.- Set your Steam to Offline mode (to not automatically recover the config from the cloud)
2.- go to the following directory:
c:\users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\AloneInTheDark\Saved\SaveGames
3.- Delete the file "settings.sav" (make a copy if you want)
4.- Run the game and check if it works
5.- you can get back to online mode
short update on your suggestion: Unfortunately it did NOTHING, because this file does not exist - there is only "steam_autocloud.vdf" and a folder "settings" which does not contain anything
When you get to that point and manually save your game, then close your game and relaunch it, does it actually save your progress? if not, the problem is not with controller compatibility, but rather your game not being able to access that folder.
so, this "setting.dave" file still doesn't exist after I got to the point where I control the character and can save myself.
And yes, if I save manually and restart the game, I can access/load autosave
I would like to mention again: I have played the game before and back then I was able to use the controller directly without having to adjust anything
Maybe you didn't notice: I've played the game before...and I can play other games normally too - why should Windows Defender cause problems now and only with one game and only in such a way that I can't use the controller with one game, even though I was able to use it normally the first time I played through it? Does it make sense that it should happen the second time and only with controller use and only with that one game? Answer: No, it doesn't make sense.
It may be that not everything is removed when you delete it, but I have a new PC, so I completely reinstalled Steam - it's still strange that it's only this game and only the controller that doesn't work
Look here, a screenshot of the controller layout
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g6ARzVzNks6a3OmEXDgEwcoO9e16kt4a/view?usp=sharing
However, the controller is still unusable, no matter which button I press: it doesn't respond
That can't be true! I can play ANY game with the controller, except "Alone in the Dark". It worked before the last big update...but since the update it hasn't worked. I can't select a previous version either, can I ?
It is still incredibly weird that the game is not recognizing your controller. No idea which part of your specific hardware/software setup it is that is causing this issue for you and the one other user who reported it.
Oh, so I'm not the only one with this problem ?
I have now ordered the CD version so that I no longer have to rely on Steam for this game and then I should be able to enjoy it
But until the CD arrives, I will look for an old Steam version
As I already mentioned, I bought the game on CD and am now waiting for it to arrive in the mail and then I won't have to rely on Steam for this game anymore and hope that I can then use my controller as usual
