Are all the melee weapons the same?
it feels like there's not really much rhyme or reason for the damage vs durability for each melee weapon. The ones you find later in the game seem to do just as much damage and break just as quickly as the ones you find early in the game like the pipe and the hatchet. Are they just essentially all the same? Or are there some that are actually better than others?

The crucifix you find in Lafayette Cemetery is significantly more durable than everything else. On easy difficulty, it can carry you through the entire rest of the game.

Is durability the only thing that's different between weapons?

I mean, besides the look and durability of the melee weapon, what else do you need/want?

You have guns that do most of the work so why would they give you melee weapons with abilities or so?

Edit: After reading your post again, OP, what you say reminds me of another game (or more) that have melee weapons in there but they are just there as an extra quick damage tool (or if you run out of ammo)

Like, if you want to melee a monster for a last hit instead of waste, let's say a shotgun shell or if you just want to hit/stab something. I also thought (sledgehammer = stronger melee weapon but will have low durability) I think the cross/crucifix lasts longer but I was too busy shooting stuff and picked up the sledgy.

I felt that the sledge lasted longer. I did not specifically test it. Regardless, it was satisfying pummeling with a sledge.

It's easy to miss in the chaos but there's a second crucifix in the last boss room, presumably to keep you getting caught completely unarmed.
I normally stick with the sledgehammer, didn't see one breaking yet.
