I mean, besides the look and durability of the melee weapon, what else do you need/want?
You have guns that do most of the work so why would they give you melee weapons with abilities or so?
Edit: After reading your post again, OP, what you say reminds me of another game (or more) that have melee weapons in there but they are just there as an extra quick damage tool (or if you run out of ammo)
Like, if you want to melee a monster for a last hit instead of waste, let's say a shotgun shell or if you just want to hit/stab something. I also thought (sledgehammer = stronger melee weapon but will have low durability) I think the cross/crucifix lasts longer but I was too busy shooting stuff and picked up the sledgy.
It's easy to miss in the chaos but there's a second crucifix in the last boss room, presumably to keep you getting caught completely unarmed.
