This. Also, you're not meant to be focusing on the constellation; you're meant to find a single bright light besides it.
I was only using up/down on the right stick for a good 15 minutes, and then finally realized that there are two lens settings to adjust - one of them horizontally, and the other vertically. Once you figure that out, it's easy, but the UI for this section doesn't make it very obvious that's how it works, because it just says "Adjust Zoom & Focus" and shows the Right stick. It should probably say "Adjust Zoom" (Up/Down) and "Adjust Focus ("Left/Right") or something more descriptive.
I have just done this on PC and the controller does not work with this puzzle. As soon as I touched the mouse as suggested by heart-of-ice, the picture jumped almost into the proper focus. Tried again with the controller and it completely lost focus again and would not become any clearer. No matter what I tried. Switched back to mouse and completed the puzzle in seconds. There is definitely a problem with the PC controller for this.
I dunno if it's a specific Character thing or a controller thing or what; but yeah playing as Hartwood on Steamdeck - absolutely no direction about the extra controls and was just fruitlessly zooming in and out with the R stick since that's all the game was showing me.
Booted it up here on PC today using M+K controls and have the UI showing all the arrows and it immediately made 10x more sense. Managed to solve it now.
This is definitely a UI problem that is going to trip up people playing on controllers.
