Struggling with combat
I have been enjoying the puzzles and exploration but when it comes to combat, I really do not enjoy it not to my taste I want to put it down. I still love resident evil from 1996 and enjoy the combat so I don't believe I'm too snobbish about it. Anyone else find this?

the combat is terrible and clunky, between the player character movement being kind of janky and slow, someone compared it to wading through mud which i would agree with, the combat just doesnt feel good

remember those items you need to throw, their location, plan your running route. Run, turn, shoot, run, throw item, wait for enemy, bash his skull with whatever melee weapon you have, fight ends, move on. That is my recipe and on standard difficulty works like a charm.

The combat is so bad that it takes me out of immersion in the story.

I started playing like I was on the streets of Silent Hill by running and avoiding everything when I could, and my enjoyment went up. Not to mention the sense of dread/horror increased somewhat.

(Sort of out of necessity also; on Hard/Oldschool in the starting options I only had 14 bullets when the first combat encounter opened up, and those enemies take about 10 shots each. Good motivator to make me avoid confrontations when I can :trolol:)

Everyone here compares this game to other games. So how is it compared to the original Alone In The Dark? It did not have fast smooth combat. It had fixed camera angles in every room and you had to even try to aim your gun at the monsters from a dutch camera angle lol (look it up).

I do enjoy throwing rocks and “Molotovs” more than using the revolver right now.

Reminded me of the good ol’ days when Joel was smashing people’s face in with bricks and bottles in Last of Us 1.

space bar dodge helps a lot. Game doesn't mention it

I'm glad I saw that in there when I was first going through the controls to rebind my Map/Inventory keys!
Didn't even know this game would have something like that, but yeah it's pretty powerful and useful :D

Yes I played the original alone in the dark 1-3 but resident evil perfected the formula and also Resident evil 0 - 3 had fixed camera angles with tank controls and had to aim with that but it still is smooth combat to this day and the animations still eye candy.

The combat isn't great...but as someone who recently played through some of the older Silent Hill games, it's worlds better than some other survival horror games. The gun aiming is a little loose, and melee combat could use with some gentle lock-on when meleeing, and overall it's pretty simplistic, but it works OK enough.

Its hard to enjoy exploring the game, when your character weighs a ton.

Throwable's are your friends. The game feeds you enough ammo so as long as you are not missing then the revolver and shotgun are your friends.

Also…dieing and reloading will reset the enemies and the area and will cause ammo to spawn.

I think 100% of comments I've seen here are mentioning the revolver, am I the only one playing as Hartwood first? :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

I'm interested to know if there's actually a difference in stopping power between their weapons, because her semi-auto definitely feels like a pea-shooter. But yeah throwables and melee specifically is where it's at.

always make sure you have a melee weapon and be sure to spam that when you confront an enemy. also you can charge your attack for more damage by holding the attack button. you can do this as the enemies come to you so they walk into it.

dodging in this game gives you invincibility frames so take advantage of that. if you are dodging against more than one enemy you might get hit by the other enemy so be careful.

pay attention to bottles you can throw in the environment. some are molotovs that will ignite when they hit and others will just spread fuel that can be ignited when shot if you're quick. these also stun the enemies and can give you a moment to get away if need be.

always put space between you and the enemies. my rule of thumb is:

handgun for 1 enemy
shotgun for 2 (if im in danger)
machine gun for 2+ depending on the situation

whats great about the machine gun when against a bunch of enemies is the spread can hit multiple targets.

when in doubt just run away and dodge. you can put a lot of space between you and them in this time and give yourself a moment to heal or reload.

It's serviceable. I really enjoyed the fact that only about 10% of the game is combat.
