Suggestion: Coop defense against AI horde.
I am glad to hear at least some news about AI. I would suggest to create the most basic "AI" coop scenarios first.
1) 100% land terrain. "AI" constantly spawns units and sends them toward your initial city in groups along predefined paths. Groups gradually increase their size. Your goal is to destroy "AI" spawners or protect your city for ~15/30/X minutes.
2) Several islands in the center of map surrounded by sea. AI spawner spawns transports and basic ships with troops which are performing naval invasions of your initial island across predefined paths. Goal and mechanics are exactly the same.
3) "AI" have a predefined heavily fortified archipelago base. Your goal is to destroy it as fast as you can. "AI" does not do anything, it simply waits for annihilation.
Reasons: these scenarios require absolutely nothing from AI: it doesn't need to create orders or manage resources. At the same time, they would already allow players to practice most basic strategies without having to spend a ton of time setting them up in sandbox or just have fun alone or with friends.
This fruit is hanging so low that it's almost a crime to not pick it. Throw there a few settings for "AI": grace period for player to build up, amount of "AI" spawners and how fast "AI" increases its army groups and it would be almost perfect basic practice tool which will keep players entertained for some time while you develop a proper Skirmish AI.

sounds good and probably not as hard as a proper AI to implement
Yea coop coop defense vs ai would certainly be a popular game mode and I believe easy to write (ai doesnt need to be smart for this).
Very good suggestions.
