I do a lot of micro on foresters because my main food source are fruits so I place it offset from my fruit gatherers range and I try to avoid much overlap on another forester/s.
On aaroubd 200-300population (on deity) I should have 3-4 foresters minimum and still aided by buy wood card (at below 10k coins).
Wood optimal production imo will just occur when full techs and upgrades are attained (again on deity).
If you just want to maximize wood output, you can strongly overlap the foresters to get as much wood out of as little area as possible.
However, as the other guy mentioned, this means you don't keep many mature trees around for fruit, and later, beekeepers.
To check this out, build a forester with nothing but trees filling up their entire radius. Then set the option to various modes and watch how many trees go down.
I find the "plant and cut" balanced option gives a fairly small radius of trees around the forester. Focusing on cutting is good for a burst of wood but falls behind in long term output. Planting only is good to rebuild a cleared area as a fruit orchard later, but obviously won't give you any wood worth mentioning.
Sometimes I set to cut non-fruit trees only and plant fruit trees to plant a huge orchard. After that you can place multiple fruit gatherers in the same area, set them to meticulous, and just get insane amounts of food. However, this means you'll need to get wood from other areas.
