My SAMANDJACK Rant
YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THIS. THIS IS JUST MY DUMB THOUGHTS ON THE PUZZLE. THIS ISN'T THE MAIN THREAD - AND I'M NOT ANY GOOD AT THIS. OKAY, COOL. G'DAY.

ALSO, REMOVED HELLA STUFF, BECAUSE THIS IS JUST A BRAINDUMP.

REASONS WHY I DON'T THINK SAMANDJACK WAS SOLVED:

Damn! I guess I was a little too late but I think I figured it out too! :D

If you correlate the morse code saying with the first two lines of the poem you get a sequence of numbers. If we put that through a 1z26 cypher we get "lpbcfjpcblijlppmjvdtcbl." Then we put that through another classic alpahbetic shift cypher and we get "hot face of the hooked an f th."

Say that outloud fast and it sounds like "On facebook and 5th." If you go to the left on read facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leftonreadgame/ and look the states are numbers (thanks to those who figured that out!) and the 5th number on is nebraska! Go back to the left on read website and https://leftonreadga.me/nebraska/!

This is so sick!!

The result given for the associated text (LPBCFJPCBLIJLPPMJVDTCBLl) is 23 characters, not the 32 of the original Morris code. Even this shifts to: HLXYBFLYXHEFHLLIFRZPYXH though, so I'm not sure how you got the "hot face" phase, val?

I think it was supposed to be: LPBCAJFJIPCBLJAALPIPPIPMFJVDTCBL. This would have to then be put through a looping A1Z26 cipher though, because the hard numbers for the association would be 12-16-2-3-27-62-6-10-87-16-3-2-12-10-27-27-12-16-87-16-16-87-16-13-6-10-22-4-20-3-2-12.

Even if we eliminated repeating values in the first stanza though (to get a more concise alphabet) it would still be 9-11-2-3-14-19-6-8-22-11-3-2-9-8-14-14-9-11-22-11-11-22-11-10-6-8-13-4-12-3-2-9 or IKBCNSFHVKCBIHNNIKVKKVKJFHMDLCBI.

Neither of these shift into anything resembling a real sentence though.

Going back to my original question: did we solve this first puzzle or did we just move straight onto the Facebook clue with Nebraska?

(Just want to check that the SamandJack page was actually leading to Nebraska and that Nebraska wasn't a clue given to us because we were struggling with the first page. And I mean that. I am just checking because I am so lost with all this. Thank you!)

Follow up to explain my thinking:

Nebraska is halfway between Cali and Michigan, right? Like, he's meeting us halfway with a clue?

But also, while I don't think we're supposed to be doing literary analysis for this thing, the three texts have really strong parallels?

Like how strangers are out interacting with others in the distance - similar to how whatever Sam and the love interest are doing has nothing to do with our protag:
Robert Frost:
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet when far away an interrupted cry came over houses from another street, but not to call me back or say good-bye...

Pablo Neruda:
The night is starry and she is not with me. This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.

Or how "all we have is now" because the narrator of the work isn’t going to get a "good" ending - which is a worry the protag expressed to his "bro" (who some people have previously alluded to maybe being party-Jackson) even though there is no game option that doesn't result in the protag getting the girl, despite making "bad" dialogue choices? Where the luminary clock is telling the narrator that he’s in a kind of liminal space between a bad option and the better one (falling back to the "all we have is now" quote).
Pablo Neruda:
I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her. My voice tries to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another's. She will be another's. As she was before my kisses.

The Flaming Lips:
"We're not going to make it," he explained how the end will come. You and me were never meant to be part of the future. All we have is now. All we've ever had is now.

Robert Frost:
And further still at an unearthly height, one luminary clock against the sky proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.

I seriously don't think this is part of the clues. It's just... a thing? Like, it's frustrating me - Chekhov's gun style. Why was the first clue "samandjack" if they aren't part of the actual solution and why is breaking up or the fact that someone's "not going to make it" themes of the two follow-up clues if the protag not winning his lady-love isn't even a playable option?

I don’t think anyone’s going to agree with me, but please let me know why I’m wrong.

To be fair, I've never had to beta one of these, but (when I played) other games like Samsara Room and PLAYWITHME everything you needed to unlock the hidden achievement was already waiting for you before the game's release.

For Samsara Room all the hints were on their social media prior to the re-release of the game (Apr 29, 2020), and the "hint" for the secret room was just "can you find the answer on these social media pages linked below?" For PLAYWITHME, you had to go to a "hidden" website link that was in one of the game’s promo trailers. That too was posted ahead of the game's release.

Circling back to my earlier question: Did we actually solve the "samandjack" puzzle?

I'm thinking maybe all the other clues are just trying to help us figure out that first puzzle? Because we're so lost? I had been working off the assumption we had already found that clue and that it LED to "nevada," but now I'm wondering if giving us the "nevada" page was just to help us solve "samandjack."

If you can explain the answer to the "samandjack" puzzle to me, I would super appreciate it!!!

EDIT: No, the page is totally "nebraska." God, why am I such a dumbass?

Well, your claim was that samandjack contains all we need to solve the riddle, and that all subsequent clues (map with states, nebraska, moon phases picture, "luminary clock" picture, "acquainted with the night" poem) were just extra help, correct? If so, we should in principle be able to solve everything with just the 3 clues I mentioned, without luminary clock or anything else.
Yes and no. I think everything we need to solve the puzzle should have been posted prior to the update that included the "samandjack" clue. 05/21/20, I think? But, also posted post quarantine. So, nothing from social media prior to March, probs.

I hate pointing to the spookulele site, just because I got told it was the "wrong direction" once, but the new moon phases we're obsessing over are on a page that links to Sheehan Ahmed's site. You can also get there via links on the leftonreadga.me site though (so it shouldn't be out of bounds). He posted a "portrait" of his house featuring a picture on his TV - that picture is also a post quarantine music video he did. Those kind of clues should be fair game?

I don't know that they are real clues, but they should be on the table.

Mostly, I'm saying we won't know anything until we figure out "samandjack."

Could be that "on facebook and 5th" thing i saw in the achievement guide?

Sorry for leaving you hanging. That clue on the guide came from an ealier post:

Val's solution can't be replicated though. Until it's explained how they got "hot face of the hooked an f th" I don't think we can consider that going forward.

This is intentional to prevent those who are trying to wrongfully unlock the achievement using glitches and cheat engines. I've been closely monitoring the analytics for the webpages of the ARG and I can see that no one has gotten to the final step yet. Once I see this, I'll be uploading a patch that allows the player to to get the "secured the bag" achievement.

Thanks,

I really connect with a lot of what you are saying here, both in the way you are viewing the lay-out of this game and the over-eagerness to move on to the next clue.

I also am starting to think, however, that everything was not available upon release. It seems to tie nicely into the theme of the game, don't you think? Left on read. Or rather... left on riddle. lol.

Also, I totally find it odd that no one can replicate the solution for Sam and Jack, but even more so that no one even cares lol. The thing is, given how absolutely abstract yet complex the solutions are, it should have been obvious that we would figure out the Nebraska clue from just the facebook picture without anything else.

It would be nice to feel progression in all of this. Nothing so far ties in together. You know, like when you are making a 1,000 piece puzzle. At first, two pieces seem to fit together, then, when they come 4, you realize "oh yeah these totally fit together!" As you progress, the bigger pictures becomes more and more visible. I certainly hope there is a bigger picture. It would be a real missed opportunity if there isn't.

Yeah. I definitely don't like how we keep skipping around. I appreciate your feedback and perception - I'm just really into the idea that a good puzzle starts with all the pieces. I really hope it's not some kind of piecemeal thing. But, then again, it’s not my game. It is what it is either way.

This thread is just for me to keep posting my ♥♥♥♥ each night. That's why it's such a mess.

Thanks again. Good luck! (Hope you solve it for me!!!) :D

SAMANDJACK has no solution
CLUE 1: from the end of realist mode
  • thank yOu for playing
  • /hpbpcsyprz
SOLUTION 1: caesar shifted cipher +15
  • /samandjack
CLUE 2: https://leftonreadga.me/samandjack/
  • POEM: recitation of “Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Lines” by Pablo Neruda
  • MORRIS CODE: WE ONLY HAVE NOW ALL WE'VE EVER HAD IS NOW
SOLUTION 2: WIP - does not point anywhere

FACEBOOK to NEBRASKA
CLUE: https://www.facebook.com/leftonreadgame/
  • Facebook banner picture was modified on May 23, numbering several states: 1. CA, 2. NV, 3. UT, 4. WY, 5. NE
  • This was posted after start of game - presumably clue to help solve SAMANDJACK
  • Nebraska is “halfway” between Michigan and California - meeting us halfway?
SOLUTION: Nebraska (Foboz stated: "ok i brute force one of the puzzles" on May 25)

NEBRASKA to LUMINARY CLOCK
CLUE: https://leftonreadga.me/nebraska/
  • Website’s banner picture was modified - presumably via a deep dream generator
  • New image titled uloxomanwo.jpg - translated from xhosa means “connection”
  • Pigpen cipher was added which can be translated via this grid: https://imgur.com/a/a5EJZ0Q
SOLUTION: LUMINARY CLOCK (modem solved May 27)

LUMINARY CLOCK to SPOOKULELE
CLUE: LUMINARY CLOCK
  • The image has a “connection” - presumably to the SAMANDJACK puzzle - maybe also to the deep dream generator
  • LUMINARY CLOCK is most famously associated with the Robert Frost poem “Acquainted with the Night”
  • In that poem, the luminary clock refers to the moon
GUESSES:
  • Could "the time was neither wrong nor right" be referring to the "not right" timestamp for the texts on the game trailer - where every text message on Day 4 (March 16, 2020) was READ at 3:30 PM?
  • Could this also have been pointing to the "All I Have to Do Is Dream" video with the dream generator image? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAvpk0y49H0
  • He posted it too early to have been working on the game, but a similar picture is on Weston's Twitter from back in Jan 19, where he said "cause everyone needs a friend :)"
  • Also, when Weston posted the second lo-fi, it might have been to get us to stop guessing Morris code, as in his "VR Gameplays" playlist, the only video not uploaded by him is one called "How to Lofi Hip Hop" by Praxi Plays. This could be because it should be IN gameplays. If so, could be a hint for the "Route 216 Nighttime Candid" piece which you should hear "route 216 music" playing for? IDK. I feel like Agent Mulder at this point. Urg.
  • p.s. route 216 music sounds hella lofi, just like the music from the first day of gameplay - is there music on any other day?
SOLUTION: Moon phases on SPOOKULELE (solved May 30)
  • Which came first, chicken or egg? - With no progress made for days, were we just given a neon sign in the form of another clue?
  • REASON 1: While it didn’t always point to spookulele.games, the page leftonreadga.me/spookulele did do so just before the page’s entire contents were replaced with the following video on May 29: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDY1z6ezqO4
  • REASON 2: Wouldn’t that mean we should avoid https://spookulele.games?
  • REASON 3: The moon banner was only noted on May 30

SPOOKULELE to GREENLAND
CLUE: http://www.spookulele.games
  • Two images are at the top of the SPOOKULELE homepage: "phas.jpg" and "us.jpg"
  • ErlaGrimsson assumed “Acquainted with the Night” and the moons on the spookulele must correlate, and she referenced clarclaire’s earlier guess that uloxomanwo was a substitution cipher for "disastrous" (sticking the image's filename into puzzle here[quipqiup.com] and hitting "solve" generates disastrous, prehensile, westsaxons, spirituali, and more gibberish - May 29)
  • Matching up "disastrous" with the poem, she got: 5 1 23 2 23 5 14 4 5 23
  • Taking all those assumptions, she then correlated the numbers directly into their alphabetical equivalents to get “eawbewendew”
  • She then unscrambled that to get: we web waned (May 30)
  • She then looked at only the waning moons and got 137 - but that led to a 404 page on https://www.westonbdev.com/137
  • Val then said that, as there were two pictures, it should be 132 instead of 137
SOLUTION: www.westonbdev.com/132.html (solved May 31)
  • Which is when the page was posted? Did we solve it, or was it given to us?

GREENLAND to VANISHING POINT
CLUE: on https://www.westonbdev.com/132.html there are three pictures
  1. What Greenland will look like with no ice (in Dutch) - withbatedbreath.jpg
  2. Next to it, an equal sign next to a hand drawn box with the words “what’s going on?” scribbled above it - 022420.jpg (022420 is the same date devs posted short film called Vanishing Point)
  3. Under the second picture, an image depicting a “vanishing point” - 982531024.jpg
SOLUTION: VANISHING POINT (themonsterofthenet solved Jun 1)

VANISHING POINT has no solution
CLUE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEoCInvvHPw
  • Is featured in Sheenan's earliest Tweet: Sheehan Ahmed @wheatpenguin (Mar 18): I promise this short @westonbdev and I made isn’t a #silenthill fan film
GUESSES:
  • Silent Hill is about a parent that loses their kid (in a town being showered in ash that looks like snow) and has to find them. There are repeated, sudden shifts to this hellscape where the protag must survive monsters. Silent Hill really has nothing to do with this video - I can only presume that this Tweet is alluding to the sudden shift (with red-tone) at 3:30.
  • Could it point to the "Boy Bye" music video? - 3:30 is when the film switches to the red filter and the protag starts to get hunted down - similar to the abrupt change in the "Boy Bye x Hip" video where an interview is spliced into it at 3:30
  • 3:30 being the "neither wrong nor right" time from the game trailer.
  • This video reminds me of the VR game "close your eyes", especially regarding the "I am you, or am I?" question - and the "let us choose: my voice that tells the future or your tortured mind" statement given just before telling you to divert from the given narrative reminds me of the ALLWEHAVEISNOW clue. The VR game also reminds me of the titles for the lofi mixes (about sleeping and dreams).
SOLUTION: WIP - no solution yet

EVEN MORE RANDOM CLUES GIVEN WITHOUT CONTEXT have no solution
TWITTER (June 7):

SILVER SIDE STUDIOS (June 10):
  • There is a Diary JPG[www.silversidestudios.us]
  • The image reads as follows:
    5/23/2020

This is weird. I haven't opened this damn thing since sophomore year of high school. Reading it was like a trip. Anyways I figured now is a good as any time to add an entry. This guy's been texting. He's really cute, but we never got the chance to get close during the year. He's obviously trying to flirting, so I thought it would be cute to keep a running list here of things he says that are rly sweet. So here:

    • Apr 1st - omg I'm here 4 u if u need anything
    • May 1st - I'll always be there 4 u <3
      • -I just try to check in on people I rly care about
    • May 3rd :
    • May 4th :(
    • May 18th - at least u have smth to look forward to now
      • - well I think ur rly rly great <3
    • May 20th - I miss the sound of ur voice
      • -I miss your smile

Then, at the bottom of the page is a string of notes without any proper notation (no staff, no clef, no time) so it's hard to interpret. The concensus from the main page is now that the tune is from Edith Piaf's "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rein"

ALL OF SHEEHAN'S ACCOUNTS (June 21):
  • His webpage bio[sheehanahmed.pb.gallery] was modified to add the following text:
High tides and low tides are caused by the Moon. The Moon's gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth and its water to bulge on the side closest to the Moon and the side farthest from the Moon. These bulges of water are high tides.
  • This is a 100% direct quote from his re-tweet, the original of which was posted by @leechbug the same day.

AND SEVERAL MORE IN JULY THAT I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO BOTHER LISTING SINCE NO ONE IS WORKING ON THEM ANYMORE.

GUESSES:
  • Multiple literary parallels - a.k.a. a “connection” - between LUMINARY CLOCK and SAMANDJACK
EX 1 (Pablo Neruda): "I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her. My voice tries to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another's. She will be another's. As she was before my kisses."
EX 2 (The Flaming Lips): "We're not going to make it," he explained how the end will come. You and me were never meant to be part of the future. All we have is now. All we've ever had is now.
EX 3 (Robert Frost): "And further still at an unearthly height, one luminary clock against the sky proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right."
  • Could "the time was neither wrong nor right" be referring to the "not right" timestamp for the texts on the game trailer - where every text message on Day 4 (March 16, 2020) was READ at 3:30 PM? https://youtu.be/tbI6ZXAY1Uk
Day 4 times are different than the wrong ones in the promo):
    • DELIVERED: Hey!
    • READ 6:12PM: How was your flight?
    • RECEIVED: Crazy! Everyone was wearing masks. I was so scared lol
    • READ 6:13PM: That's insane ! Glad you make it safe
    • RECEIVED: thanks!
    • READ 6:13PM: saturday night :(

    • RECEIVED: ya they did! my sister is coming home next monday
    • READ 6:14PM: cool! have you seen any of your friends yet?
    • RECEIVED: nooooo not yet but my friend Sam and I have plans on tuesday!
    • READ 6:14PM: that's great! is Sam a guy or a girl?
    • RECEIVED: haha y do u ask?
    • READ 6:15PM: just wondering
    • RECEIVED: im gunna go to bed noow gn :^)
    • READ 6:16PM: Oh ya! Forgot timezones are a thing haha. gn :)
  • If so, could this be referring to the "Boy Bye & Hip Mash" YouTube video posted by Sheehan which had a snippet of an interview spliced into the middle of it at 3:30?
  • Since his 2nd Youtube channel only has two uploads - this mix and a tiny clip of a "spooky dude" (with both posted after quarantine started) - the "Mash" is obviously a clue. (It's also featured on his Twitter and Insta.)
  • The video had captions provided on video by Sheehan (see below) https://youtu.be/6v3ffhlBNpw?t=205
    Boy Bye Transcript:
    • 3:26 - music video is interrupted
    • 3:26: he had a rough nite last nite
    • 3:29: sounds like...
    • 3:30: ...a fun time :)
    • 3:31: it was insane xd
    • 3:34: [NOT TRANSCRIBED] Oh, no. I look at the comments section. Everyone's like "bearface is talking good."
    • 3:38: Ah, so you're that kind of group.
    • 3:39: IM JUST CHILLING YOU KNOW?
    • 3:40 - back to music video
  • "Insane" is an option on a day that mentions Sam and "just chilling" is an option on a day with the dude presumed to be Jackson. Could be coincidence. I just (as always) don't like it.
  • That second video on the channel called "spooky dude runs in snow" is set at night and "route 216" is snowy - vocal creds for that clip are to baby boy by kevin abstract uke cover with the cords listed as: c c7 f fm - Ultimately, this points back to BROCKHAMPTON though.
  • In that video the word "night" is misspelled - and Sheehan also has a Pokémon picture posed on both his Twitter and Insta (about Route 216) with different captions, one of which is about "nighttime." Underlined tags on Insta posts refer back to music video.
    Insta @sheehansgraphx (Loc: Sinnoh Region on Apr 24): "Artwork by me but you hear route 216 music" #art #digitalart #digitalillustration #painting #digitalpainting #photoshop #photoshopart #snow #fanart #pokemon #dragontype #groundtype #sinnoh #cold #coldcolors #sinnohregion #gen4pokemon #garchomp #brockhampton #bearface #dunkey #pokemonart #pokemonartwork #artwork #illustration #dialga #palkia #gen4pokemon #areyoureadingthese #artistsoninstagram

Corresponding post on Twitter @wheatpenguin (Apr 24): "Mr nintendo please give me #gen4remakes for #pokemon Piece is called "Route 216 Nighttime Candid"
  • I don't know what "dunkey" is. It doesn't seem like BROCKHAMPTON - but what do I know? Maybe it's the YouTuber?
  • Second Pokémon post on Insta seems unrelated to anything else, except Weston (@weston.bg) commented on Insta to the post, saying "I think you dropped this 🏆" and the description read:
    Insta @sheehansgraphx (Loc: Unova on Apr 30): "Generation V is the best one objectively" #art #digitalart #digitalillustration #painting #digitalpainting #photoshop #photoshopart #fanart #pokemon #dragontype #darktype #unova #cold #coldcolors #unovaregion #gen5pokemon #garchomp #brockhampton #bearface #dunkey #pokemonart #pokemonartwork #artwork #virbankcity #roxie #roxiepokemon #illustration #hydreigon #areyoureadingthese #artistsoninstagram

Corresponding post on Twitter @wheatpenguin (Apr 30): "virbank's finest #pokemon #art" is a little bigger and has a signature in it
  • Both Pokémon featured are pseudo-legendary dragon types - one from Gen4 and one from Gen5? There are only, like, nine pseudo-legendaries period and most are dragons though. One thing is, Garchomp is Cynthia's in the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2, and Hydreigon is Iris' and Lance's in Black 2 and White 2. Roxie, while in Black 2 and White 2, doesn't use either? Roxie is the gym leader for Virbank Gym and usses Koffing and Whirilipede.
  • Maybe it's about the unity Pokémon game on Sheehan's site? That could also explain the weird Tweet about switching from Unity to Scratch - which would be dumb because Scratch is an MIT opensource playground for children? Nothing makes sense as a clue on the page though - even though that one has been recently edited.

CRACKPOT THEORIES:
  • Generation 4/5 refers to Weston's earlier life stages game - based on Shakespeare's "All the World's a Stage"[www.poetryfoundation.org] - where four is a soldier and five is the justice - could correlate to social justice game on https://www.westonbdev.com/vrar.html
  • Generation 4 could refer to "Paralyzer"[d2f8l4t0zpiyim.cloudfront.net] 3d art on Sheenan's webpage, as Metroid Prime 4 is the yet unreleased FPS by Nintendo (which may finally be coming out in October - I didn't know that). Could tie into Tweet from @wheatpenguin on Apr 24: "Mr nintendo please give me #gen4remakes..." - I definitely read something about an FPS on one of Weston's things, didn't I? - then again, he posted 2d art for it too[d2f8l4t0zpiyim.cloudfront.net] Dec 2019, and that's too old to be a clue. Probably just a coincidence then.
  • Vanishing Point is a clue for Boy Bye (PRETTY SURE THIS IS CANON GIVEN THE LATEST TWITTER POST), as the short is about a guy getting dissappeared, which then leads back to the "Tonight" poem, as a girl and a boy are broken up
  • Sheehan Ahmed's Twitter @wheatpenguin just posted the following on Jun 7, 2020: They the future classic call them bach-hampton #BROCKHAMPTON ... This was probably a clue since we've been stagnate on the message boards.
  • Boy Bye would then be the answer for ALL WE HAVE IS NOW and the poem, putting us on track to solve for SAMANDJACK
  • The "objectively" Poké-Post has Pokémon #635 Hydreigon - in Gen5 there's also a Beartic who's an ice type at #614.
  • I WANT IT TO BE THE POKEMON IN UNITY3D![sheehanahmed.pb.gallery] URG! URRRRG! Or maybe the cave video (part 5?) since the sprite goes into a cave? Nothing makes sense and everything hurts! None of this makes sense! I don't know what "dunkey" is, but I'm assuming its the YouTuber? He did a video on remakes that focused a lot on Nitendo, and he said they were better on PC. But there's nothing on that Unity3D page that helps with the puzzle - it's all 1st Gen... Except the little video?
  • Hear me out: May isn't 1st Gen. She's only in Ruby (3rd Gen) and some Game Cube games? But that isn't where the fisherman's house is in Ruby? He's that crazy old many by the sea with the lost bird. And, besides, if you play as Brendan, then May is your rival; you'd meet her when you pick your starter - not by some lake. So where is this? And what cave is this clip?
  • Nebraska was 5 and Gen. 5 is "objectively" the best - like, "here's your trophy"
  • Did I already meantion scare repairs[westonbdev.itch.io] and how the eyes match the second Poké-Post?
  • Also this:

RECEIVED: yeS omg just saw Parasite
READ 2:45 PM: I LOVE Parasite!! The cinematography is soo sexy
Then again, I don't know that there's any correlation between the Day 18 and the impossible time. The times on Day 4 are definitely different than the impossible ones in the promo though.
