Drox Operative 1 VS 2
This has probably been asked before, but: What are the differences between Drox Operative 1+DLC and Drox Operative 2?

Gameplay wise it's largely the same main game loop with a few important tweaks here and there that makes it much more refined.

In order of importance I'd say the biggest differences:

The introduction of both generic and ship race specific skill trees: There's not really enough skill points to really use them much... but they're there! Crews have been expanded and have bonus to those skills, sometime.

Weapons: As one example among many, beams type now include Chaining Beams and Linear firing beams. A new fighting option has been introduced, ramming. Almost all weapons types were refined and expanded on, it's a genuine feature worth noting at this point.

And... that's about it for the major points. There's a million little addition, bug fixes, quest change, "behind the scene AI stuff", to the game that makes it better but they are small incremental changes that don't on their own count as features. Out of these smaller changes the addition of more flexible treaty options, randomly generated minor races and refined Drox questing (and winning) come to mind. You can link your weapons. Scale the UI. Stuff like that.

Here's most of the bigger things:

* Build a unique ship with a new skill/command system
* Enjoy better graphics (normal maps, better specular maps, and higher resolution textures)
* Enjoy new combat sound effects
* Deal with more treaty types (vassals, tributaries, protectorates, and federations)
* Find more component types (plasma cannons, ramming components, probes, ballistic bursts, plasma blasts, manual beams, chaining beams, plasma waves, etc)
* Experience faster movement and combat
* Interact with randomly generated races (just the young races)
* Discover way more interesting things while exploring
* Protect or exploit primitive races
* Find crew with skills
* Place spies on planets for better info and spying activities
* Access much more information on the 4X aspects
* Play as the rebels of each of the races (42 total playable races, rebels, and subraces)
* Win sectors with the new Guild Win
* Survive Cataclysms, massive sector wide events that can greatly change the balance of power
* Play with better controller support

Still finding the game a tough purchase after having owned Drox 1. I mean for a new player it seems like Drox 2 will be terrific and a good introduction to Soldak games, but not sure it's a guaranteed purchase for returning players. Incremental improvements have been the name of the game for about a decade now, but I think I need more before I throw more money to Soldak.

Are controls for the controller clearly labeled? I can't find anything for the first game, which makes for an artificially steep learning curve.

This is the Default controller config menu , you can see the buttons are labeled but you might not be sure what something means until you try it, (for instance left and right click wont make much sense if you haven't play it with keyboard and mouse)

The game does feel much better on controller in my opinion but the default controller set up wasn't great, I re-did most of it in a twin stick style that is more common in these type of top down space games like Starcom nexus or Nienix.

This is what I rebound it to

As for drox 1 vs 2 , I would never play drox 1 again , 2 is just better in every way , playing drox 1 would feel like a major step back.

Just the skill system alone is a major game changer , you get to pick passive skills and create your own build , MUCH more interesting than drox 1's system of "max only command skill" or "max something that isn't command skill".
