Getting started
How do I get started? The game said there was a guide in Steam, but I did not find any newbie getting started guides.

The closest I could find was "Simple Guide" by EnDrew, which was mostly just some videos.

Does anyone have a spoiler-free getting started guide?

Join the game's discord server. There is a lot of helpful people and a goldmine of suggestions.

To start with, DO NOT PISS ON THE GROUND. Do all that you can to keep the fog low until you gain experience and build your stats. Armor up, the crafting guide has recipes for this. Craft an axe as soon as you can, it's a good melee weapon and the only reliable way to get wood-essential for bases. You need a ranged weapon too-a crafted crossbow is a good choice until you find a gun. Various arrows can be crafted, see the crafting guide for recipes. Don't let the little pests (spiders, cockroaches and termites) touch you-they add sickness that reduces your stats and makes you die easier. You need save chests right off too, items simply dropped will despawn. Be sure to check out the keybinds in the settings. I put my "take a leak" on "P" because when it was "Q" (default) I was continually pissing on accident and had things attacking me as a result.

How do you make an axe? It's not in the "build" menu.

The axe is crafted, not a build. Crafted items are placed in your inventory, or dropped at your feet if your inventory is full. Builds are placed in the world.
**(May contain mild spoilers depending on how much you've explored.)**

Here's a few things that helped me get started.

1. Build a few small bases across whatever region you're exploring. You can either find a house that has both a sink(for saving) and a bed(for sleeping), and use something like metal walls to just block off the rest of the house. Also, if there's, say, a hallway that leads to several rooms, just block off the entire hallway instead of individual doors/windows. As long as you have easy access to the bed and sink, you're good. If you can't find a house with these amenities, and you need to hide or rest or whatever, hole up in a mobile home or one of the smaller house-like structures, craft a bedroll, and just craft metal walls over the exits. I always try to keep some cloth and metal sheets on me for this purpose. You could craft a door, but it takes more materials and you get strength XP for bashing the metal walls down once you wake up.

2. To remember your base locations, make yourself a map. You can make a screen capture of the map, load it in MS Paint or whatever, and mark a dot on your base location, and if you have the GPS, include the coordinates. If you find a point of interest but you're too low on health or inventory space, you can mark these down as well. I've had to "nope!" out of certain areas because i was not armed well enough or my inventory was full, and I'm kicking myself now because i can't for the life of me remember where the hell i was.

3. If there's a place you want to explore, but you know that there are enemy spawns there, try and take care of that location when your fog level is low. That way if you increase the fog by killing enemies or whatever, the effect won't be as overwhelming.

4. Use your saves wisely. I have my saves set up like this:
There are six total, two rows of three, right? I use the first three(top row) as my main saves, in order of danger i'm in on the save, if that makes sense. The leftmost save is my "i'm probably screwed" level save. The middle is the "everything is fine, probably" save, and the save on the right is the "man i'm really making progress here" save. The second row uses the same system, but i consider these my backup saves. I use them when I've made enough progress to where i feel I've hit another plateau as far as skill, items, etc.

5. Much like Kenshi's toughness stat, Endurance in this game requires that you get damaged in order to progress. I generally run around without armor for a lot of the early game in order to raise this stat. You can tank plenty of hits from melee junkies(excluding chainsaw junkies of course), the flying insects, etc, and i recommend letting enemies get a few hits in, provided you can heal up afterwards. This will happen naturally with ranged enemies. Their attacks are unavoidable, they will hit you, and the stat will rise. The "let em get a few hits in" strategy isn't feasible here. There are a few areas I've encountered so far where enemies are chasing my character in an enclosed space, and i suddenly encounter an obstacle(or several) that i have to break open in order to escape my attackers. A group of melee junkies is fine to fight in this scenario, but when even one ranged enemy -- or worse, two ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mosquitoes -- enters the fight, it can be absolutely unmanageable. With an upgraded endurance stat, you'll be able to tank a few more hits and wail on that obstacle without as much risk to your character.

6. The broken beer bottle is a great melee for clearing obstacles as described above. It takes an extremely small amount of stamina to swing, does decent damage, and will allow you to bash the obstacle and still have enough stamina to run away. Be sure to turn around and get a hit or two on your attackers if they're getting too close. Hit em in the legs, anything to get them off your back.

7. Don't focus on acquiring any specific item that you may see in the trailers, etc. One of my first saves played out as me walking the entire perimeter of the map looking for a vehicle, without realizing that the game would lead me to one through progressing the story, as i found out very, very early into the next save i started. I find the exploration in this game to be very good, and introducing frustration through this kind of hyperfixation kinda makes enjoying that part of the game impossible. It helps to have a general goal, but ya gotta remember to put it on the backburner if an opportunity presents itself.

8. If you start a new save and can't remember where you found certain essential story items, Grandmaster_Sherm has a great, relatively spoiler-light guide here on steam, with clear warnings when the spoilers will be present.

Hope this helps.

How do you set up the biological toilet? I’ve been trying to figure it out, I’ve befriended a few different types of enemies and walked them to the toilet but don’t see how to get them in it or put it on them.

You have to capture them with a plastic bag first. You can capture them while they're stunned from a melee attack(gotta be quick about it because they get up relatively quickly), or in the case of the non-human enemies, they'll sometimes do this forward-roll like movement, and you can capture them with the bag during the animation. Once you have them captured, when you approach the biological toilet with the plastic bag it'll give you an option to place them inside.
