What's with the ladybugs?

Could someone explain how the ladybugs work? I can't figure out how to intentionally collect them, and I'm not sure what they do, other than being tallied by Ancient Glitch at the end. Does getting all of them unlock bonus levels?

I think they're meant to be time limits.

The red ones fly away once enough real time has passed while the blue ones fly once you switched characters too many times.

there's also purple ladybugs you can find in some levels that require you complete the level without killing any enemies.

Okay, it sounds like they're mainly a 'challenge mode' then... can anyone who's collected all of them confirm whether they unlock something?
