Is it better to use in-game voice chat w/ friends?

When we play Phasmaphobia we always deafen discord and use in-game to up the tension because then you don't know if someone died or not and once they're dead they're out for the round. Is this similar? Should we avoid using discord to enhance the experience or is the in-game voice chat global and not proximity based?

100% it is worth it to use in game voice chat as it is proximity based and it adds so much to the game, getting separated is truly terrifying with proximity chat, you hear your friends slowly recede into the distance and every now and again you hear their distant screams from the other side of a wall or hedge.
