Can't figure out the final level (Spoilers, obviously)

I can't find a way for both characters to reach the ladder simultaneously. Do I have to beat other levels to fill in gaps or something similar?

I don't think there's a way, actually.

I know this original comment is almost two years old but since it was bumped (and since I'm currently playing the game)... there's a video guide posted in the guide section that shows all the solutions, so if truly stuck one can check there.

I think you'll understand when you reach the last level, but you really can't do it with both characters.
