Troubleshooting and Common Q&A! (OpenXR runtime tips!)
About OpenXR

XR Games is proud to announce that Zombieland: Headshot Fever is one of the very first titles in the world to use OpenXR[www.khronos.org]!

We want everyone who loves VR to be able to play our game, and so we’ve been working with Valve, Microsoft, Unity, Oculus, and HTC to use OpenXR and bring Zombieland to as many VR platforms as possible. It’s not easy to adopt new software, and we've helped crush a horde of bugs in the process. We think we've got them all, but in case you encounter any that sneaked past our brave QA heroes, we'd love to hear from you. If you have an issue, hit us up at feedback@xrgames.io or post a comment here in our Steam Store Forum. Together we’ll help make OpenXR better for the whole community.

How does it work?

In order to get your headset(s) working properly, you’ll need to make sure that you’re running a compatible OpenXR runtime on your system. This is especially important if you own more than one VR headset of different brands. Please check the compatibility table below:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2560865872
If your headset isn’t on that list, it might be supported by the SteamVR OpenXR runtime, but we cannot guarantee that your experience will be as good as when using officially supported devices.

What’s my current OpenXR runtime?

The easiest way to find out your OpenXR runtime is to RIGHT CLICK on the SteamVR window and select ‘Settings’.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2560878252
Next, select the ‘Developer’ tab as shown below, and toggle the ‘Advanced Settings’ to ‘show’ on the bottom left.

Your current OpenXR runtime is shown in the middle.

How do I change my OpenXR runtime?

For SteamVR OpenXR Runtime:
Follow the steps above to find your current OpenXR runtime. If your runtime is incorrect, click the ‘SET STEAMVR AS OPENXR RUNTIME’ button. This will set your current runtime to SteamVR.

For Oculus OpenXR Runtime
Open your Desktop Oculus App. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Beta’ within that menu. At the bottom of the page is a button that reads ‘Set Oculus as active’, so click on that to change your OpenXR runtime to Oculus.

For Windows Mixed Reality OpenXR Runtime
Open the Mixed Reality Portal, then connect your device. If you’re not already on Windows Mixed Reality OpenXR Runtime, a warning message will appear at the top of the portal window. Click the button marked ‘Fix it’ to set Windows Mixed Reality runtime.

For VIVE OpenXR Runtime
Launch the VIVE Console. A window will ask you to switch onto VIVE OpenXR Runtime. Please only use this runtime for play on the VIVE Cosmos headset. Other VIVE headsets are currently unsupported.

Alternative Options
We DO NOT recommend that users modify their OpenXR runtimes via Windows registry unless they know exactly what they are doing.

However, the OpenXR runtime JSON file path can be modified in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1
via Windows Registry Editor. Each OpenXR runtime JSON path depends on where you have installed your VR Headset software, so you’ll need to hunt them down.

Common Q&A

Q: The game is running on a flat screen and I see the message: “There has been a headset connection error.”

A: First, please check if your VR headset is fully functioning.
Then check the above table and see:
  • If your VR headset is supported
  • If your system is on a compatible OpenXR runtime

Q: I can see the game in my VR headset, but I can’t get past the “Please connect both of your controllers” message.

A: Please check if BOTH of your controllers are fully functioning.
There is a current issue on HTC VIVE Cosmos that if you are on SteamVR OpenXR Runtime, it will not be able to detect any controllers. The fixes are on the way (SteamVR 1.19.4 beta).

Q: My hands are tracking, but I can’t operate any menu buttons.

A: Please make sure your game window is in focus - that it’s not running in the background. This is especially important if you launch the game without SteamVR running up front (the SteamVR window may take over the focus). Click on the game window to restore its focus.

Q: I am in the game. I can see my virtual hands but nothing else.

A: Please look around -- you might be facing the wrong direction. The menu may be behind you.

Q: I see screen tearing / performance is poor.

A: You can lower the graphics quality setting in the game options menu. If you’ve accidentally turned it too high, launch the game in Graphics Safe mode before lowering the settings.

Q: There is no sound, I can’t hear anything.

A: Please check that your system's default audio output device is set to your VR headset. Some VR headsets will override the system default, so please check your VR headset audio settings too.

Known Issues

VIVE OpenXR Runtime Crashes
HTC VIVE / VIVE Pro / VIVE Pro 2 / Cosmos Elite may crash under VIVE OpenXR Runtime. They are officially NOT supported by HTC. Please use SteamVR runtime instead.

VIVE Controller Haptics
VIVE controllers currently have no haptics. We have reported it to Valve.

HTC VIVE Cosmos on SteamVR OpenXR Runtime
VIVE Cosmos currently only works on VIVE OpenXR Runtime. For SteamVR OpenXR Runtime, the fixes are already in SteamVR beta (1.19.4). So, you will soon be able to play under either runtime. However, we still recommend that you use native runtimes (VIVE OpenXR Runtime in this case) for the best performance.

I cannot take the shotgun out of the holster with the grip button

First, move either of your controller and hover the shotgun on the belt. You should be able to see the shotgun becomes less transparency when your controllers are on it.
  • VIVE controllers ("wands") -- toggle the grip button to pick/drop the shotgun.
  • Other controllers -- hold the grip button to pick it up.
I'm loving this game so much, but lately I hesitate to play it because I'm having a problem. When I play the game on my Valve Index, there's a mirror image of my game play on my monitor. I have no problem playing the game at all. Its when I close the game or exit VR that the mirror image on my monitor has frozen in full screen with no option to close it. I cant even see or use my mouse. Also I still hear the characters of the game talking even though I closed the game and exited VR. I have no choice but to do a hard shut down of my PC every time I play this game. None of my other games have this issue. In fact none of my other games produce a mirror image to my monitor at all. I have that setting off in steam/VR.
Any idea of what I can do to fix this?
Same issue for me
