I am REALLY trying to enjoy Civ VII
As of writing this, I have 390 hours in Civ VII. I am not sure when I started playing the franchise, either original Civ, or 2nd Civ... I loved Civ III and CivNet (which I know I was able to complete at least one game)

Civ VII is not the same experience as starting with a settler and a warrior. Building from the minimum to dominate the world, whether it be by combat, diplomacy, science, culture or what have you.

I absolutely detest the way the ages are now split, this is NOT the Civilization that I have had on my "I can always enjoy THIS game, between other games" list. This reminds me of the 8-12 months before release of the little "scenarios" pushed before release... starting in the MIDDLE of something that someone at Firaxis, apparently, thought everyone would enjoy. I believe I did 2 of the monthly ...?? campaigns? designed to keep us placated as we waited for Civ VII release.

I don't see a way to restructure the main mechanics of the Civ VII release... and I am incredibly sad by this realization.

One thing that -might- help rekindle is getting the workshop up AND/OR making some of those QOL mods to the base game. Mods I enjoyed from Civ VI, like map tacks, is sorely missed. I NEVER used mods in first 3 years of Civ VI, I have ALWAYS tried to do games without any mods first, saving mods for after I tired of vanilla gameplay.

Disappointed doesn't come close to my feelings, regretting my pre-order of the Founders Edition

Anyone else feel this way? so far as the whys that is?

Those are literally among your starting options though? You can simply choose between warrior or scout as your first production that is guaranteed to take just one turn.

Despite having embraced the ages system myself, I can still relate to one thing:

But if I said that, I wouldn't mean it as a critique of the gameplay as much as "this isn't the Civilization of the past games", which is true to each game in the series, in various regards... but perhaps the leap is the greatest here and now in Civ VII.

I don't find the "split" in ages difficult to handle or immerse myself with at all (this is pretty subjective of course), but there's no denying that the "split" is there. I also feel like the "split" of age transitions is strengthened when I'm playing other games or just different saves in multiplayer and then hopping back to single player. This isn't really a fault or flaw in the game, though. In fact, I'd even hazard a guess that most strategy games are exactly like this... we simply have too limited brain capacity to hot-swap between long-term strategies and tactics on the fly. As such, I often play a full game or just an age of Civ VII in one go and don't really play anything else, or even do anything else at all if I can help with, but that's certainly not reasonable to expect from everyone and at any time.

Then again, in the past I struggled with finishing my games of Civiliation, and this is one of the issues that Firaxis wanted to tackle in Civ VII, and I think it works to great effect there. It's easy to imagine the new flow of play takes some time getting used to or doesn't suit everyone, but this is rather subjective and the basic facts of the age system were discernible well before the release... Don't pre-purchase unless you're absolutely certain.

Well, I had written quite a bit... but buggered something in the quotes so deleted post... I don't wish to spend more time on now except to say...

GET THE WORKSHOP UP AND RUNNING
adopt those top mods into the game so we can see wtf the mechanics are
MAPTACKS is foremost in my mind. Help us see adjacency so we can decide planning

I am REALLY trying to enjoy Civ VII

320/320 Civ VI steam achievements
Guessing 15k hours spent playing in the total franchise
