Why did I not win?
I went for the Space Race victory and finished the path one turn before the end. When the final turn came up, the game announced that the Modern Age was over and played an animation that made it seem like I had won—something about my satellites roaming space (I don’t remember the exact details). But then... it showed me a Defeated screen!

Apparently, some NPC player won because they had more "points" (more colors on the final bar). None of them actually reached a victory condition, so what gives? Also, shouldn’t I immediately win upon completing the Space Race goal instead of the game continuing until the last turn? This feels broken!

has no one an explanation for this? Is it a bug or did I somehow extremely misunderstand how to win the game?
Did you actually run the Staffed Space Flight project after finishing the Launch Satellite project, just to be sure?

If noone secures a win by the legacy paths, the winner is the one with the highest legacy point score. That or domination of course, which is also a possibility.

but the game says, and I quote "This is the final Age. You must complete any Legacy Path this Age to achieve total Victory."

As far as I can see, I completed the Science Legacy Path (I even got the Achievement for it). So why did I not achieve "total Victory"?
All of the Legacy Paths have one special objective which you "unlock" after you have reached the last milestone, which you need to complete to win the game. Thats how I have understood it seeing some videos and guides about it.

yeah, seems that way. But it is badly explained and displayed in the game
I also lost my first game, the AI seems too aggressive and as I was on a winning streak the game ended. Going all out military seems like the only way at the moment
