My issue is that if you maximize what you can do in the Exploration Age, the game is already over. It's the same exact problem of earlier Civ games despite everything they've attempted to change. I can fairly consistently complete at least two legacy paths, sometimes even three (sitting on relics and trade ships is a good tactic... hoarding them up, and only putting them into temples or using them in the homelands in the final few percentage points is often viable).
So, basically, my thought: the Modern Age is indeed a click-fest, but it's largely because the Exploration Age allows me to lock-in a rather substantial lead. The issue might be more the Exploration Age, not actually the Modern Age, IMO.
especially if you're already outpacing the opponents by the time you enter the age, its just a giant slog to build your wonder and win
I'm not the biggest fan of war in the Civ franchise - other games do it far, far better than Civ as war in a particular era is their main focus, and I tend to find there's more war in the modern era than before and that slows down progress. It's definitely fun for a while but once I've 'won' the big war, I find the more I progress through the modern era, the more I just find myself wanting to complete my session and start a new one.
