Pre-ordered but feeling restraint to play due to bad reviews
I want to play but the 43 percent reviews are a real turn-off.

You already bought it so you might as well give it a try. Don't pre order next time though :D

Dude play it. It's way better then people are acting. It has problems but nothing other games don't have.

Things it does well:
-Progression. The game has stuff to unlock, for me this is big and adds a ton of replay value.
-More unique civs. Because they are breaking the game into multiple ages they can now have more civs in the game even if they occupy the same TSE location or play with similar mechanics. The Nepalese do not step of the toes of the Inca for the spot of "Mountain civ."
-War. War in my opinion is better then ever, honestly this deserves a sub catagory.
*Unique units matter always. Because of the age break up and changing your civ during them, unique units actually matter in every age. They also upgrade 2 times before the end of the age keeping them relevant.
*Terrain additions. Navigable rivers and elevated and cliff terrain changes warfare dramatically. If you ever wanted to have the "Battle of Thermopylae" experience happen organically, your in luck. This also enhances city building.

People need to care less about what other people think of games you want to play.

Just started a game and My capital is settled on the second tier of a 3 tier coastal cliff face, with a waterfall running out of the palace tile. The steaming jungle mist obscuring the land that will soon be turned into a metropolis.

Well you are too late to refund it under the two week rule so you might as well give it a shot.

Worst case you learn not to pre-order and can leave a negative review to help people. Or maybe you like it I guess. Some people do.

Just wanted to write the same thing. The game has been out since almost two months essentially, so OP won't get any kind of refund anymore. So might as well give the game a shot.
game is honestly great. don't be a sheep, play it for yourself and see if you like it and don't worry about if anyone else does or not. Over 20k playing on just steam right now so obviously people find it enjoyable.
Try it for yourself, many games i enjoy are not the best reviewed one.
I like Civ 7 myself so i don't care for the negative reviews.
If you decide to try it (and why not?) be sure to go to https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/ to get some mods, including the mod manager. There is not yet an official workshop, but the modders have been busy. UI and QoL mods are especially important; I won't make specific recommendations but you can find some reviews on youtube.

Go play it dum dum. Your own review is what matters in the end.
It's a good game full of bugs and great graphics

If it was pre-ordered it means you've had it at least 2 months so not eligible for a Steam refund regardless of if you play it <2 hours or not, so.... not sure I'm understanding why it is just sitting in your library unplayed???
My thought:

The only advantage of waiting to try it at this point is more patching. If you want to wait for further patching, that's up to you. But waiting isn't going to help with the cost, because you pre-ordered... you already own it, so the normal 'wait for a sale' advice wouldn't apply.

But it's already gotten some of what it needed as far as patching... quick movement, notifications for a settlement being attacked, and a decent amount of bug-fixing (though a fair bit more is still needed IMO).

If you end up hating it, at least you tried it out to know for sure. If you end up liking it, cool there, too. But unless you try it, you'll not know either way.

i have never read any reviews about games I wanted. If I did, I would not have the games I have in my library. I have watched Youtube videos.
