I've played a fair amount on my Steam Deck, and it controls very well, although I will always prefer mouse and keyboard for this kind of game.
I kinda dig controller just to kick back and take a break if anything. Love how I can pop in and out on the fly with it.

I just gave the game 5 mins and was annoyed; I wonder if controller or on SD is the actual way to go .. probably gets a nice pan the screen on the left stick if I had to guess which would be cool to swoosh around.

My random story for my 5 mins of play, that no one cares about:

Fired it up on PC, love the music, looks like nice animations, well done graphic language on first couple screens. But wait... no edge scroll, took me a sec to realize left click gave smooth scroll, but for some reason I'm used to edge scroll, fine. Ugly as sin font choices .. for such a beautifully graphied game and series, choose a non-basic font :P .. tutorial dialogs poppup up all over the place (guess I missed a buried tutorial option on first game), ... tutorial box pops up big in centre of screen, with no obvious dismiss button; theres the (-) in top right which minimizes it, but leaves a smaller box 'click here to re-open' right where the box was, so.. right smack in the middle of the screen (should be off the side?) ... I guess the only option to continue is to click in the 'choose production' or 'choose whatever' in bottom right, but I'd like to look around first. Bring up city (having not played civ 6 at all, life too busy, and 5 was long ago..) and select production, only scout or warrior so scout; then a moment later 'choose production' forced click, which thought I did by picking scout, but okay so now I have some building or district whatever improvement it was, so I pick that and .. now its hiogyhlighting the city hexes around the center, and if I hover over one it says + or down arrow icon on the left, but .. no info what that means. If I place that building or district does it kill the the yield and replace it with its own, or add to it? What does the building _do_ for real, and what do the .. I'm just starting out, and theres no info, no idea wtf the choices really are, nothing to go on.

Can sum up - where are the hover-over and hyperlinks in the 'tutorial' boxes; look at Age of Wonders for how to do that well - every interesting word in the boxes can be hovered or clicked to get more info about it. And this is _Civ_, after what, 8 or 9 years of dev? They should have _killed_ it for the UI and returning player experience, as they always have.

So, just exitted; I'll come back later when they've iterated a bit and made the UI explain more, and just 'flow better', not be so annoying. Probably flows okay once you get going or if you're already familiar with how to play or give it some time, but coming back after years and just firing it up - not a noob in the genre or the series (having played since civ1 first day), but imagine the noob experience - its not good.

Sigh. Civ V and VI had better first run expoeriences.
I guess my expectations were low because everyones mad about the UI alread. I ended up enjoying my first game of Civ 7 considerably more than most did.

It's pretty good, and being able to swap input device on the go is appreciated as well. Switching things up can make for better ergonomics while on 16-hour civ sessions...

Yes, the fact that you can go from one control scheme to the other simply by picking up a controller or moving the mouse is nice.
